I think the only real difference is aesthetics - which looks better to you?

There are those that will argue tonal differences but this is a big topic of debate.

Rosewood is very, vrey rarely used for necks, but commonly for fingerboards.

Necks seem to be dominated by maple for Fender and Mahogany for Gibson.

Personally, 'enjoy both maple and mahogany necks and maple or rosewood fingerboards, depending on the guitar or bass. No "exclusive preference."

An ebony board on a maple neck is very, very sexy, the personal fave.

Rosewood is generally polished, not finished in the same way as Maple where the finish is usually some sort of urethane. Rosewood is a harder wood than even Hard Maple. Rosewood also has a higher oil content than Maple, which makes it a good choice for things such as humidors.

As for tone, you would have to have an exceptional set of ears to discern the tonal nuances between the woods. I have guitars that have Maple, Rosewood and Ebony fretboards and, maybe I'm too old or listened to too much loud music in my youth but, I can't tell the difference.

I believe its more about personal taste and feel. Personally, I like Maple fretboards the best.
