Welcome to the forums.

That being said, you spelled "microphones" wrong. Second, they are pickups, not microphones. Third, humbucker, not buckinger.

Sorry, I'm somewhat anal about things like that (though on this forum, I'm sure I'm not the only one...)

I, personally, like the P-bass more. It's cool lookin', comfy, great sounding... Though I haven't actually played a Jazz bass. I usually don't like the looks of it, but when it does look good, oh, it does look good.

P-basses are cool. Jazz basses are cool as well. Depends on what kind of music you like/want to play.

How about one that has features of both.
Both precision and Jazz base pickups, and active or passive circuitry.

The Reggie Hamilton artist series bass

Neither is "better" - they're just both different.

That's what I have - gives me all the options and the best of both worlds.

Hi rockzrodri, welcome to the Forum.

I'm sure as heck not a bass player but I do have a very nice '75 Reissue Jazz bass. I really like some of the hollow "in between" sounds you can get with two pickups, balancing them against each other with their two volume controls.

Now if I could only learn to play that thing as well!

Cheers - C

The J-bass will have more tone options because of the dual pickups and positioning. However, the P-bass has more the "classical" sound if that's what you're going for. But you also have to consider playability: the neck, body style, weight, etc. The way to decide what's "best for you" is to try both a few times and on some music you like to play.

As mentioned, there are also hybrids to consider. For instance, I have a Made in Japan (MIJ) Jazz special fretless with a J-bass pickup in the bridge position and a P-bass pup in the neck (middle) position. That allows me to get slightly different tones than a pure J-bass without changing amp settings.

All of which brings me to my final point: what amp are you going to use? Since that adds to the tone possibilities and limits, you should try your choices with the specific amp you're planning to use if at all possible.

some sound differences between both basses are listed here in this thread.

Check em both and here and your ears and heard what bass sounds better for you.
