Any names for your guitars?

I don't want to name my Squire, so i'm waiting until i get a better guitar to name it. Not sure why...

Well if i do name my Squire, i'll give it a name like...Maude...

I felt silly doing it but was compelled. I named my carmel metallic powerhouse strat "Orange Crush" and my black on black project strat "Hotblack D" (after a character in Hitchhiker's Guide)

Some seem to "name themselves" by virtue of colour, type, circumstances of acquisition, history with the player, affiliation...

...and thereafter, be thought of as such, "by name."

Have fun!

I only did so when I talked about them it was more than just "that one red strat" "my woody strat", "my taylor dreadnaught", etc...

The two I named are...

Lucy: 94 MIM, customized, metallic red, red tortoise pickguard, chrome racing stripe on it. Obvious reference to red-haired comedian Lucille Ball

Jenna: 98 MIA, customized, refinished in vintage tint, very cool guitar, sexy looks and tone. This is my dream guitar, always sounds great, I can always play well on it, and it's been through a lot with me. Partially because I like the name, and partially after the very wild Miss Jenna Haze.

I don't know. I'm a girl, so naming my guitars girls names just seems wrong, even if that's what most people do. I thought about naming them after my favorite guitar players, but then I'd have like two or three Jimmys. I thought about naming them after their colors. Then I thought about just calling them #1, #2, #3 etc. So I don't know yet.

I named only one: Loni - Fender Lone Star Strat '96. That was nearly.

My Sandberg Alterra is named from the manufactor, so Alterra.

For the others I haven't think about it yet..

Cheers

Yep, it's fun, especially for my kids. And sometimes a name is shorter than the actual model name, by a long shot, for example, "Brownie," versus "Tex-Mex Telecaster Special."

Here are my guitars' names:

Sonia '60 Duo-Sonic
Brownie Tex-Mex Tele Special
Blondie '52 RI Telecaster
Seven Squier MIJ P-Bass
Ruby DeArmond Jet Star
Blue Ovation Breadwinner
Chrissie Hamer USA Special
Cherie Les Paul Studio DC
Nell Fender Standard Jazz Bass MIM
Joan Gretsch Electromatic Special Jet
Violet ‘parts” Telecaster w/Seymour Duncan mini-hum in neck
Raquel Fernandes Ravelle Deluxe
Valerie Agile P-90 Valkyrie II
Theresa 1980 Peavey T-60
Cassie Les Paul Classic
Rickie Rickenbacker 620
Candy Peavey USA Predator Strat
Stormy Schecter Tempest Special
Corrine Brownsville Choirboy
Rose Daisy Rock Retro-H
Goldie Epiphone Ltd. Ed. WildKat
Dani Danelectro Hodad
Farrah Peavey USA Fury Bass

A lot of them are plays or puns off model names, or the guitar's color.

Buy USED if possible. If new, buy clearance or "B-stock" (returned, shopworn, etc.).

Know where the pawn shops and flea markets are in your area. Next time you go out for groceries or to the hardware store, hit just the places you know are along route the of your errand. Sooner or later you will find something worth investing in.

It also/usually helps a bit if you're a "regular" customer,so to speak. Buy some CDs every couple of weeks or something. Once they kinda remember you, it's easier to get hooked up. But in general, always "lowball" & be prepared to walk away. Even if you're not going to buy something, bullshit around with the pawnbroker. If you're a likable person and not the crackhead type they sometimes have to deal with you're apt to get a better deal.

Also, keep your GAS non-specific (this applies to other purchases as well). As soon as you decide in your head "I NEED a _____," you're doomed. For this reason I keep a lonnnnnnnng mental list of "guitars of interest"-- ones which I might someday buy-- IF the price is right. Especially when a pawnbroker knows you've come to the conclusion that you must purchase a certain kind of guitar you've got problems, because you've removed his or her incentive to deal.

One thing I let pawnbrokers know is that I already have a ton of guitars. Even if you DON'T have a ton of guitars, let sellers THINK you do. This tells sellers 2 things, both of which redound to your favor: first: you have no immediate need for the specific guitar they're selling, and second, you know the worth of things. Both factors let them know you will not pay an inflated price though you will buy, but will insist on a good deal.

I should note another great strategy-- buy from friends and acquaintances (for this reason, it is good to go out on the local scene, and eventually be in a band). Many of my best buys have been things I've bought from friends and acquaintances.

A lot of times in "friendly sales" the seller has something s/he doesn't need, but in typical guitarist paternistic/maternalistic fashion, wants the gear to go to someone who will use it and take care of it. In those situations, everybody wins.

For these very same reasons it's a good idea to know your local pawnbroker on at least a nodding acquaintance.

As far as making the money in the first place, if you're young STAY IN SCHOOL and get a decent job. Don't buy more than you can afford. The guitars I have did not appear overnight, but over 30+ years. And probably over half of them were less than $250 USD.

If I can do it anybody can! If you need some inspiration:

Eileen. She's a surf guitar, see, so she's named after a wahine that I know and my wife doesn't.
