I stuck around the music store after my lesson tonight and tested some Boss pedals that were on display. I tried the overdrive, compression and EQ and saw merits in all three. But I think I came the closest with the compressor and EQ. I'm really pretty happy with the overdrive o the amp, so the compressor will give me a boost and really seemed to round out the tone to my liking. I think the EQ would be the icing on the cake, it would give me some real control over the overall shape.

But which pedal to start with?

Would anyone recommend the Boss pedals or is there something better?

I've been using a Boss Metal Zone Distortion since they first came out. Still got the same one, it's still going strong.

My tuner is also a Boss and I've had it since 1982, still works perfectly.

If you like the sound of the Boss pedal, it will definately last and continue to sound as good as it does now.

I picked up a used TS9 along with a Boss EQ today. The Tube Screamer really smoothed everything out and did exactly what I wanted. But in combination with the EQ....tone nirvana! It sounds just awesome. The EQ really adds a lot of depth to the sound. I couldn't be more pleased. :D

Thanks everyone for your great advice.

Just a quick note on this, that is a cool setup you have indeed. The classic Peavey amps are a good platform for pedals too so you are in luck to experiment, hopefully without having to spend too much $$$.

I would recommend setting the amp how you normally do to get a really good rhythm sound on clean & overdrive settings. Then, for heavier parts or leads a good overdrive or drive pedal should assist at taking the highs out.

An affordable option that comes to mind is the $30-$40 Boss DS-1. I used to get a huge bottom end boost from that pedal. I'd turn the distortion & tone knobs completely OFF and just use the volume. You get a huge sounding "darker" voiced lead tone on the neck pickups & a crunchy rhythm for rockin' rhythms. Hope this helps, let us know what you decide on.
