I did my shopping before February 1, but as the guitar is to be delivered in about 2 months I've been caught by the increase; a double one: the MSLP increase and a lesser discount from my Dealer.
Hopefully the US$ is quite low..

I wonder what you bought? Possibly a Mexican Standard? Or a Korean Koa model...?

Ok, it's Feb. 2nd. Sam Ash, Guitar Center, and Musicians Friend's prices have stayed firm. In fact the clearence prices on last years MIM Standards are giving me a little G.A.S.

I even called Guitar Center and asked them for prices on American Standard Strats and a Blues JR. Oddly enough, the person on the phone went to Guitar Center's website to find the prices. Plus they said if I found better prices theyd match it and give me 10% of the difference.

However, being one to err on the side of caution, I'll wait one more day before I Rant and Rave about reacting to Unfounded Rumors, including a crash course on Rumor Confirmation.

I just want to interject here since I am the OP. If you read what I posted- I DID NOT say that OMIGOD PRICES ARE GOING UP_RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!! (a bit melodramatic, yes). My origianl question was- is this for real or is it just a ploy? As time went on, folks started posting that this "rumor" was being substantiated by some of their local dealers.
Getting no response from Fender, which in my opinion would have put this to rest, we could only base things on what dealers were saying. Of course, I was hoping that this was a rumor all along, since there is a MIM tele that I wanted (that is still hanging on the wall). We have seen so far that prices on some things did go up, but not on other things. From a markeing standpoint, that is pretty shrewd as well -since it seems that the increases were mostly on MIM products, AND if people are hearing rumors of a 30% increase - they will breathe a sigh of relief when you "only" raise 'em 10%. I understand that Fender prices overall are a great bargain for those of us who are working musicians- but wasn't that Leo's original idea? A good guitar for a working musicians price? It's still a stale economy and a price increase- ANY price increase at this time, IMO still sucks.
So FM before you rant and rave, remember the original post was a question "is this true" ? Hopefully, it wasn't/isn't :D

I purchased the Jim Root Fender Telecaster about a year ago when it was $899. Although it was made in Mexico, there was enough incentive for what it had to offer in what I was looking for. It came with a beautiful case as well. So in the long run I lucked out. Roughly $950 after sales tax.

Right when I received it, after an order was put through to Fender and lay-a-way, the guitar base price was raised to $950 pre-tax. So it would be roughly $1050.

However, I notice this extreme price increase jumped this guitar to $1199 with a suggested retail price of $1499.

For a made in Mexico guitar that is rather steep. I can only imagine now the price of the American made guitars. I guarentee this slow sales down in this economy.

Hi Scanman13, I didn't mean to point any of my tirade at you or any specific person. And let me Appologize to anyone I may offend in advance.

Hear's the thing, P.T. Barnum is credited with saying "There's a Sucker Born Every Minute". What he failed to tell us was there's two con men for every sucker born. Knowing that, one should immediatley question anything that sounds like a sales pitch. For example, if you notice cracks in the foundation of your house, and you call a contractor to fix it and he tells you the price, and you get a couple other bids and they're the same, you can pretty much trust the deal. If you're sitting in your living room and a guy with a hard hat knocks on your door and tells you that your foundation needs repair right now and he's the only one who can do it, it's time to start asking the 5 types of "Are You Kiddin' Me?" questions.

Let's say you read in a Discussion Forum that prices are going up on your favorite products. It's not time to stock up on the Fender Products for your new career in Ebay sales. It's Time to ask;
Who?
What?
When?
Where?
Why?

Q. Who said there is an increase? A. Someone said a Salesman in a Store Somwhere told them that probably fer sher theres an increase in Fender Products.

Q. Who's increasing, Fender or the Stores A. The Salemen at Stores all across America said it's an across the board hike on all Fender products. :?

Q. Who's Increasing Prices, Fender or the Stores? A. Prolly 40% or more.

Q. Who's increasing Prices, Fender or the Stores? A. (After researching as many financial publications as I could) Apparently no one is.

Q. What could cause Fender to Raise prices on everything? A. Materials? No, we'd be hearing about guitar prices going up in other companies and small companies would be going under at a faster rate that they are now (which is alarming). A. Bad Economy? No, a smart company like Fender knows you have to cut costs and keep prices low in bad economies. Well, ascence of evidence is not evidence of absence, so.....

Q. When? A. Feb 1st

Q. Why Feb 1st? A. ??????? The begining of this Fiscal Year happend to be the begining of Jan, the MSRP list has been issued for 2009 and the Road Worn series is in full swing. Marketing Nightmare!

Too Many Unaswered questions for me, instant Red Flag! Someone is testing the P.T. Barnum Theory.

Q. Who would do that? A. Salesmen. A. Psychology Students at Berkley. A. Bored Teens.

Q. Who benefits from the rumor. A. Music Stores and Fender

Q. Where did the Rumor start again? A. Music Stores

Q. Who let it run without checking it. A. Fender

That's enough for me, Flag on the Play, B.S.-ing, supply side, no penalty, sucker takes it in the......wallet.

Sure looks like they went up to me, roughly 15%.

http://admin.fender.com/resources/price ... ctrics.pdf

American Standard Strat w/Rosewood is now $1590MSRP as opposed to $1,399. Original EJ is $2,930 instead of $2,499.

This MSRP list has been out since the begining of January. Nothing happened to the prices on Feb 1st.

In this economy.......they might just get surprised with a slowdown in sales. This will surely put Fender guitar out of the reach of those who could barely afford the old price. I'm glad I already have the guitars that I want.

People are now doing without on much smaller priced items. And it's only going to get worse, before it gets better.

like many people i save money for my future gear purchases. my purchases are usually made on my birthday and in december...so twice a year. My next three purchases were going to be a american strat, a deluxe reverb reissue or a custom vibrolux reverb and a 57 or 62 strat. these purchases were going to be made over the next year and a half.

While i will still buy the american strat even with the price increase, i am now reconsidering the amps and the 57 or 62 strat.

maybe i will just be content with what i have....which includes a 59 bassman reissue ltd, a mexican strat and a mexican tele, and a 52 tele reissue.

or maybe i will consider other amps.

or just maybe with the price increase of the 57 and 62 strat...i will get a les paul instead.

i understand everyone needs to make a buck but the pice increases seem steep especially with the economy in the tank.
