That's what my source is strongly suggesting. For reference, since I see you're from upstate, I buy a lot of gear through Rose (Rosemary) Nicotera of Nictotera's Music in Utica. I've done business with her dad and now Rose since the mid-1960s so I know I can trust what I'm hearing. While she's not outright telling me not to order the red Tele, she's mentioned "price increase" along with "what I have in stock" several times.

She has not mentioned any actual figures but said she'd have to "get me a price" if I ordered. In my mind, that strongly suggests also that there's a significant increase. If it was only a matter of $25 - $50, I don't think I'd keep getting the nudge to buy rather than order.

You have all the power you need in your wallet. If prices rise and stuff doesnt sell the companies soon get the message. Particularly when they have to start laying people off. Its time to start being very frugal, hard headed and mean. Forget your moral conscience too. With the current climate there should be a cut in prices, not a rise. Anyone who's raising prices, or not passing on intrest rate increases (in the case of british banks) is obviously profiting from a stagnant economy. Or rather their share holders are using the economy to bleed a bit more out of the spending public.

Yep, we do have the power to control prices to some extent-problem is, just like everything else- too many folks will say "oh well, I guess that's how it is" and continue to let themsleves and the rest of us be led by the nose. I for one will not support any company who thinks they can hit me with a 25-30% increase on a product that is basically the same product that I paid 25 -30% less for...
DOn't get me wrong, I love my guitars especially my Strat - but that new Tele will either have to wait, or I'll shop around for a good deal on a used one.

I love Nicoterra's, and I'm from the immediate Utica area. Bought my second bass from her father when I was 15. Great store. How cool to meet you here, what a small world. Rose is definitely a straight shooter. I go in there sometimes to talk shop. Great people. Stores like that are few and far between in this day in age it seems. Unfortunately, the only purchase I've really had my eye on would require an order, so no dice for me.

Supply and demand deems that prices will go down.

False.

Quantity demanded would decrease.

If it is true it will keep me from gassing for a new Strat or Tele for a long time. Seems like a huge price increase when the economy turns this sour only turns prospective buyers to look to other manufacturers for guitars. I've always been a Fender guy, but a 20-25 % increase in these economic times would be a slap in the face, not to mention putting my brand loyalty in jeopardy.

The buying public really does have a BIG say in how it turns out for Fender, when they increase their prices. When Fender raises their prices, stop buying Fender products...it's THAT simple. Buy from the competition, like Ibanez, Yamaha or Peavey. The retailers won't care too terribly much, so long as they're selling guitars and such, but before long they'll have to do something about their stock of Fender products that are starting to just take up space.

They will just come back with a cheaper and lower priced product like most companies have done in the past. Take a look at the history of the EVH guitars and you will see that pattern from one manufacturer to another until he finally got his own "company" brand name.

Sucks for those who want to buy stuff, but you can blame one man for ruining the economic stability of the entire world and throwing the US into even more financial debt.

Honestly you can't pin the blame on any one person. No one in the world has that much power.

Anyway...

I never buy new anyway but if the price of new guitars goes up that means the price of used instruments goes up too. And that really bites. But I guess everyone's got to raise prices sometime.

A big internet retailer has this notice on their website:

Quote:
Fender is having a MASSIVE price increase on February 1st. The largest one since we've been a Fender dealer! If you are even slightly considering a Fender purchase, you may want to do it in January.

Ouch! (Mind you, for us that's just the result of currency shifts: Fender's price increase must surely come on top...)

I tried discussing it with a kid behind the counter in a guitar shop the other day. He told me that we must expect one price increase per anum [spelling intended]. I asked him if we couldn't just continue paying the usual way - through the nose...

Cheers - C

What a shame. I was hoping to save up for a Fender Hwy 1 H/S/S. I guess this is something saying I should be happy that I have my Strat and got it when they were still $400. :)

You know what this all means. The roadworns are going to be selling for $1187.50 or £930 in the uk come febuary. Cant see em being a success at that price. Who in their right mind is going to pay a grand for a mexican guitar. Truth is far eastern guitars are on a par with mexican guitars.

£930 indeed. I could buy a tokai and a good amp for that.

What has me concerned is that I wonder if this big price increase is going to happen across all the Fender owned brands like Gretch, Jackson, even Squire, or the other non-guitar companies under the Fender umbrella. It would be a real shame if all those brands reflect this price hike as well.

Good thing that I'm a used buyer.

And if the increase is as big or bigger than expected, switch brands. That'll teach 'em.
