I was at my local Sam Ash earlier today and there was a sign posted in the guitar dept. that as of Feb 1st all Fender guitars and bass prices were going up - big time. For instance, American Standard Strat- from $999 to $1275, MIM Standard Strats from $399 to $550!! I know the economy is tight but whoah! Has anyone else heard this or is it just a ploy to get some guitars sold?

Ouch! That makes me glad that I finished my latest round of Guitar Acquisition Syndrome during December and early January. Now I can justify my last 3 guitars with... look how much money I saved by buying now.

Hello Scanman13,

Last week I talked to my local
little guy shop owner, I asked
about future price increases &
explained it's a sad fact at a
bad time he told me to expect
more than 10% increase on the
telecaster that I'm interested in.
Oh well.

Cheers.

Gonna get worse for us Canadians then cause we already pay out the rear compared to US prices and the sad thing is that we are right next door boarder wise, it's not like stuff has to be shipped overseas, right now prices on instruments is about 15-20% more in Canada. The cost on all instruments did drop here when our dollar was much higher to the point where gear was almost face value of the American prices, but since it has dropped back down everything went back up to the prices that they were before. Fender isn't the only one jacking up their prices, Gibson did the same thing starting last year apparently and I am sure all the other guitar companies out there will be doing the same. Sucks for those who want to buy stuff, but you can blame one man for ruining the economic stability of the entire world and throwing the US into even more financial debt.

Is that a smart move in an economy going down the tubes? You see how that worked out for the housing market, the financial sector...

I was in Sam Ash over the holiday shopping season... and they were pretty much cleaned out of the lower end gear. But, the high end Fenders and Gibsons... the Ricks and ESP's are still in abundance.

Not a good time to drop 1,200 - 3,200 dollars on a guitar, I guess.

I am curious as to why????

The economy is in the tank and no one is buying anything. Supply and demand deems that prices will go down. Additionally, the US dollar has increased on average over 15% (to other currencies) over the few months. Shouldn't that make Fender's buying power stronger with their suppliers?

I mentioned this in another thread, I got an e-mail from my place in Glasgow the other day. All Fender guitars are going up by 20% on the 12th of January, I'll have to go and buy another Tele in the next day or so

Isn't it funny how when gas prices went to $4.50/gallon, all goods and services went up to match the energy and shipping prices. Then gas fell to $1.65/gallon ad magically, all the goods and srevices that went up did not go down with the gas price drop :?

It's also funny that diesel fuel for the trucking industry went up with gas prices, but did not come back down with gas prices - hence the goods and sevices staying high.

You would think that as the consumer, we could have more power to drop the prices of goods and services, God knows we are always the demand reason that drives the prices up. :x

I had the price increase confirmed by a dealer I've bought from for years, and I'm 100% sure she's telling me the truth. I was looking at AmStd Teles and mentioned that I'd heard about the price increase.

She said "yes" and also that if I wanted a Tele she had to order, I'd probably be hit by the increase. If I took one of the two in stock, I'd get the old price even if I waited until after 2/1. She didn't mention how much the increase would be but suggested that I should really think about the red one I wanted versus the Natural and black she had in stock. This tells me that there'd be quite a difference and it also suggests that already she couldn't order one at the old price.
