Ok I'm game...I have to say no. It would be hard to do a show with a guitar that probably not stay in tune.

And the answer is_____________________________

I hadn't heard that particular twist on the myth yet (1/4 sawn necks) but it sounds like nonsense to me.

I did hear that:

Ritchie Blackmore swapped out the Strat he was playing for a dummy Strat when it came time to break it on stage.

and

Pete Townsend first started smashing his stuff to destroy evidence because (since he couldn't afford it) most of it was swiped from music shops and pawnbrokers shortly before a gig.

Hehe! I'm gonna confirm one and refute the other.

I have indeed seen Ritchie Blackmore on film from the early '70s sneak over to his roadie at the side of the stage to swap his player Strat for a smasher - which was duly smashed.

However, Townshend broke his first guitar at a gig at the Railway Tavern in London. There was a very low, thin ceiling above the stage and during a dramatic move he stuck his headstock straight through it, leaving a hole and damaging the guitar. The audience reaction was a snigger of amusement, and in anger at that (and no doubt to cover his embarrassment) he proceeded to demolish the guitar. As Pete has said, Keith Moon was a great "joiner in" and immediately destroyed his drumkit in response. Which shocked and delighted the crowd, winning them back round and simultaneously causing the band to find themselves in debt for most of the rest of the decade.

It's not a myth - but it is a legend.

Cheers - C

I can always count on ya Ceri.
2 thumbs up!

The smashing is probably why Pete predominantly chose "Gibbys" (easier to demolish) :D

Heard pete townsend say in a interviewthat he destroyed em out of frustration. He couldnt get em to perform the way he wanted so he wrecked em.

The low ceiling tale sounds more than believable though. Particularly moonies interjection. He was a great prankster. I read, one of his favourite japes was to dress vivian stanshall (of the bonzo dog doo dah band) up as a vicar and tell him to wait at a busy bus stop down the street. Moonie would then come tearing down the road in his rolls royce. Screach to a halt at the bus stop, jump out of the car, duffy stanshall up a bit, throw him in the boot of the rolla and drive off.

The really crazy part was that the'd never sneak a peek at the bus stop afterwards to see peoples reactions. They just drove off into the sunset.

my guitars break just fine all by themselfs, I need not to help them in any way shape or form, if you feel the urge to break a fine instrament like a guitar smash it over your flippen head & then choke yourself with the remainder of the strings if your urge is still there get some lighter fluid & do one better then Hendrix set the guitar & yourself on fire, sorry I got off on a tagent, yes i did smash one of my guitars the reason being is I sold my very first guitar my parents bought for me a 62 SG for a sears harmony guitar because the harmony had a wammy bar & the SG didn't later on in life after my brains jelled & I figured out what the hell I did I smashed the hell out of that harmony, but it didn't make me feel any better

It would be pretty difficult to properly smash a guitar with solid neck & truss rod! Although the hendrix burning trick was pretty authentic

And then Hendrix said "The time I burned my guitar, it was like a sacrifice. You sacrifice the things you love. I love my guitar."

Here's one for ya.
Who was the first guitarist to use a violin bow on a record ?
Like with most things, I don't know the answer to this but I do however remember a guy from around 1965 in a group called The Creation. He used a bow on a song called ' Making Time ' I can't remember his name though but he is the first I can think of.....cue..Ceri.
I used to mess about with bows and things earlier than that but I found the resin ( or is it rosin?) clogged my strings and I wasn't recording back then anyway.
So, do you know of anyone earlier?

His name was Eddie Phillips in 1966.
