Barry, its ok mate, i've survived worse situations. I'm just having a moan that i have to spend savings (i worked hard for to have as a safety net), on essentials. when people who dont work through choice are feeling no change to their situations at all. Hopefully things will be bought into check by buisiness's after the end of the tax year. Buisiness sorting this mess out is about the only chance we have. The banks wont do it, their nothing but a legalized form of the mafia. Their still profiting at the top.

I could get into quite a rant about the inadequacies of the British government but this is not the place. I have my own business and if I used the same 'ostrich with its head in the sand' policies that our government ran for the first 9 months of 2008 we would be buried. Why none of the major powers saw this coming at least 12 months ago is beyond me and the banking industry should hang its head in shame for its greed and bringing on the *&?^ the world is facing now.

Totaly true Jaiyenyen. My longstanding self employment (21years now, infact ive never been employed) is what has led to my DSS claim being denied. Typical england, persecute the strong and pander to the weak.

"Who says they didn't see it coming" is the opinion of some of my more consipiracy theory oriented friends. According to them, it's all part of the plan to drive people to such levels of desperation that they'll accept almost anything in return for some degree of comfort, food and safety.

I'm not a black helicopter type though and am more inclined to think that government is more like a disconnected series of eddies in a stream. Each is directed by its own local factors (special interests, etc.) and there simply isn't enough connection or organizational purpose to carry out any master plan. There were some groups in the US government that were warning about disaster long before it happened even with others were blasting ahead with the very policies that helped cause it.

I suspect the company I worked for would produce similar results if each department could operate on its own self-serving/self-perpetuating plans and policies. In fact, that does happen in companies -- say when Marketing promises something based on goals that have nothing to do with something engineering can deliver (for one example). So it is with the government: no true leadership with the authority to set goals and enforce cohesive action from top to bottom.

Interestingly, many SciFi books written in the 50s and 60s took the theme that "some day," democratic societies would have collapsed into utter chaos. After that, it would take a strong dictatorship (possibly benevolent or maybe not) to get the world running in one direction again.

October 22,1999 This was the headline. This is were our present mess begins. Just read the the big news of the day.
Quote;

The White House and congressional negotiators agreed early Friday on compromises that clear the way for passage of major legislation overhauling Depression-era banking and financial services laws.
Administration officials said they won agreement on a provision that can block mergers of banks that cannot prove they comply with the Community Reinvestment Act, which requires banks to provide loans and other services to poorer and underserved areas.
After two decades of trying, both the House of Representatives and the Senate this year passed bills to allow banks, brokers and insurers to enter each others' businesses, a change for which the banking industry has lobbied aggressively

End Quote;

Many knew what was going to happen with this but just as many law makers knew they could make big money for a few years then bail when the bottom fell out. There a reason these companies where kept seperate and not allowed to act together. There was a reason many could not get loans in the past but now the reform bill required them to not caring that they could afford it or not, they get it. Well now we are all paying for it in what we now no as the BAIL OUTS. The people who pushed this through in 1999 made their big money and ran leaving us to hold the bill. Look who was in office at that time and you will see who is to blame. Think about it.

I left my job in Dec '07 to take a similar position at a "larger, more stable" company. Long story short - it was larger but not more stable. Got laid off in October. Good thing I left my old company on good terms -- they took me back -- one level lower. I feel very lucky . . . so far.

You are lucky to have the job and that they took you back... thank your stars my man.

I'm luckier yet. The company I went back to had a layoff Thursday. I'm still there.

Darn.... It really hits me hard, hearing about some people's carreers going down because of rich rulers...

Some of my friends in school's parents work for banks, in high positions, and the only thing they get is a replacement, and sometimes even a bonus.
Even though these are my friends, I get quite angry with the system sometimes. And Holland isn't even REALLY feeling the consequences of the ignorance of the american government...

Anyway, try to keep your head up in these rough times and know that music can be a great source of hope, and misery can be inspiration.

Phillip, i didnt actually say that, though i do agree 100% with the statement.

If you dont think theres a conspiracy in this, i suggest you look at the main profiteer's. The usuall suspects who strive not only to make more but to also keep the majority from making much and thus rising to a par with them and raising inflation.
Their still profiting, more and more and more. Infact the profits for bank owners have risen during this time.

There's only one way out of this that i can see. We have to do what hitler did to rise to power. He took the Jewish principle of 'a year of jubilee' to end germany's inflation crisis that happened after the first world war. All purchases revert back to their original owner and all debts are wiped clean.

My heart goes out to all of you. My wife owns a small business, and the economy has hit it pretty hard. She's not had to lay anyone off, thankfully, but she's not been able to hire additional people. I hope the new administration doesn't follow through with raising the taxes on small business, because that will force her to lay off people.
God bless you all.

this economy is in such a mess, i think we better all start a band & get on the road!

Everyone I know is being effected no matter what industry they are in. It's insane, and I am certain it's going to get worse before it gets better.

I hope all that have lost their jobs are able to find some way to cope with it, i know it's very difficult to work it out. A terrible way to start 09 out.
