I left my job in Dec '07 to take a similar position at a "larger, more stable" company. Long story short - it was larger but not more stable. Got laid off in October. Good thing I left my old company on good terms -- they took me back -- one level lower. I feel very lucky . . . so far.

I don't know that I've lost my job, but work is nil.

I work for a mason and there's only the two of us in his company.

Had a couple of big jobs going on this fall and everybody was pulled off of 'em. The shells are up and that's that.

Have a couple of bids out, but haven't heard back.

I'm not too worried. I'm not in debt and everything is paid for. Have money.

I'm getting to old for the trades anyway. No kids are coming up in the trades either. It's just us old guys and immigrants. Have been trying to hire younger ppl for two years -- they last about two days. It's all good.

Work is for those with nothing better to do. The people who really enjoy their jobs and love what they do make their craft look more like fun than work. Find something you really, really love and get really good at it.

Good thing we all have music to fall back on!

The shoe is on the other foot for me, I had to release 2 people on Monday.

One needed to go for performnace reasons, the other was just to help make the stockholders feel better.

I work for the County so my job is pretty secure.
My heart goes out to anyone who has been put out of work or who's position is precarious.

I too have been jobless since September. I worked for an ad agency that is in the automobile industry and well, car dealerships are spending less each month. Some have even gone out of business. Still no job interviews for all of my applications. I am doing ok mentally, which is what is important, so it isn't as bad as it could be.

What you say amazes me... the number of car advertisements I see on TV on a regular basis, especially during football games is outrageous. If you are talking print advertising, the TV ads may be a huge part of why they are spending less on print and more on TV.

I was in a Marketing/Print advertising company as well before I lost my job... they canned our whole print division... now only doing web work... no more printing of postcards, newsletters, brochures, ads, etc.

You are in a tough position to have to be the man to let folks go. That can not be an easy task.

Mine went mid november. If their was a miracle cure for the construcyion industry tomorrow it would be about 7 months before it affected my trade.
I've taken a training course in computer maintainance and networking to do in the meantime. Construction is a dead end industry.

Your comment goes to show how this economic crisis is affecting the countries worldwide, being you are from the UK and feeling the pains of layoff as well.

Keep your heads up, it will only get better.

With over 500,000 layoffs alone in December of 2008, a total of 2.6 million folks layed-off last year, and yet hundreds of thousands more to start off this year and counting. And with unemployment up from 6.7% to just over 7.0% this month already... what do we have to look forward to when no one is hiring for good paying jobs?

I am still keeping a positive outlook, believe me, but it is just getting worse and worse as the weeks go on. I have applied to places I never dreamed of because I am unable to find work in my profession of graphic artist/art director/creative director. I have hit grocery stores, retail stores, restaurants, etc. and still no luck in landing work. It becomes a burden to look for work, especially after searching for over a year now. Ho hum... but hey, I have you guys!

Barry, the uk is in a terrible state. The government wont accept the fact that were in recession, never mind on the verge of depression. Their not tackling the problem at all, just pretending its not that bad. Couple that with the welfare state and the fact that everybody is complacent because they can claim benefits. Its wrecking the countries economy as a whole. The years of abuse of our welfare system has led to a series of benefits that cant benefit the workers and just provides for the same old lot that have bled it dry for years instead of finding work.
My benefits claims were refused, the social services reason for refusal was, 'its just a temporary lull in your buisiness year'. Luckily i managed to cram 60-70 hour working weeks in for the past 2 years, so i got a bit saved. It just rankles me that i have to used my hard earned savings to feed my family when the girl next door breeds to feed, has never worked and never will. Has 5 kids by a different fathers, that spend the year going in and out of care homes because she beats em.

No justice in this world.

Wow! Your situation really hit me hard when I read it. My heart goes out to you. I keep reading and hearing about all the stuff in the USA, I am not up on other countries, except for tidbits the news decides to tell. It is a damn shame what has been happening everywhere, especially when the red flags have been up for so long, and the government has been ignoring the problems coming through the tunnel.

As far as the welfare situation, and the folks you mentioned... well I have my feelings about that type of stuff (it is not good for me to express here, so I will bite my tongue).

You have always been good folk here... I wish only the best for you.

Here are a couple of news story links a friend sent me to make me feel better (I guess).
If they are true the outlook for 2009 does not look to good either.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... E&refer=us
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... zi80MoS8J0

I was semi involved with an catalog company for a short, won't name them but just about everyone has the catalogs for the store in their homes..
First a lot of the product became sourced from AP.
The catalog photography and printing were done in NA.

Then the catalog printing went to AP, lot cheaper there.
Then someone had the birght idea to move the product photography to AP as well.
Why ship product here to shoot then send back to be printed.

So the only thing left in NA is the foreign made catalogs shipped over and given to people so they can buy foreign made goods.
.
Yes advertising is alive and well, it is just not done locally anymore.

What I don't get is if all the jobs have went elsewhere, Who is left here to buy all this nice product. Last one out turn off the lights.

Barry, its ok mate, i've survived worse situations. I'm just having a moan that i have to spend savings (i worked hard for to have as a safety net), on essentials. when people who dont work through choice are feeling no change to their situations at all. Hopefully things will be bought into check by buisiness's after the end of the tax year. Buisiness sorting this mess out is about the only chance we have. The banks wont do it, their nothing but a legalized form of the mafia. Their still profiting at the top.

I could get into quite a rant about the inadequacies of the British government but this is not the place. I have my own business and if I used the same 'ostrich with its head in the sand' policies that our government ran for the first 9 months of 2008 we would be buried. Why none of the major powers saw this coming at least 12 months ago is beyond me and the banking industry should hang its head in shame for its greed and bringing on the *&?^ the world is facing now.
