Any one here lost their job this past year due to the economy?

This may be a personal subject, and if you prefer not to get involved, that is understood. But it certainly does affect us all, especially if we are feeling these hard times.

I lost my job in January of 2008 due to company financial problems and they started cutting employees left and right.

I have applied to over 40 jobs this past year, with 2 resulting in responses, and one that resulted in an interview out of the 2... and I did not get the job.

It has not been an easy year, but I am surviving somehow... must be the folks here and the music that keeps me going, as well as my art work. Keeping a positive outlook as well.

I haven't lost a job in the past year, but when I graduate with in May with a degree in Electronics Technology, I am wondering how the job market will be at that time as far as being able to get hired...

Keep a positive outlook guys, things will ease up. I was forced off my job and had to retire due to an injury I got on the job so as long as you can work, keep trying something will turn up.

On returning to work after a time in which they made me go on disabilty I was told the University wanted me to return back to the Mid East on a Goverment contract and when I told them I did not want to because I no it would go many many more months then they said, well did not go well. Several times the last few years I have been put in bad positions doing tower and rigging work overseas. Well it was getting old and the last time I ended up being shipped home and in Hospital for month then layup at home so they said we will give you this and thanks. Now looking
Still doing my side work though more so now. Local shop has sent me some also.

Yes, that is a concern... I wondered that myself... with everyone that has landed in the unemployment line last year, and the jobs cuts still coming our way... what kind of a future does that hold for all the graduates this year especially as they will add to the hundreds of thousands of folks now looking for work since being laid off?

We are in a ride for more rough seas ahead.

Mine went mid november. If their was a miracle cure for the construcyion industry tomorrow it would be about 7 months before it affected my trade.
I've taken a training course in computer maintainance and networking to do in the meantime. Construction is a dead end industry.

You may be okay -- in tech, the job losses are hitting older people (now down to 40+ so some say) extensively. A good friend with years of Fortune 500 experience was questioning me one day on why several of our programmers, all with major league resumes, would want to work for the small, no-name company I work at. "Simple," I said, "they're in software development and all over 40. They were finding it very difficult to get offers anymore, even though the jobs were out there."

But the biggies are hiring youth, especially if you've done a business world internship or you're willing to start off in something like that. The kids of two co-workers were able to move up into great tech jobs when they were willing to start with the company as an intern. They got close to minimum and no bennies ... but it got them in. Both ended up with offers at the end of a year or so.

The key though: as is the case in many emerging countries, they could not support themselves during their intern phase, so they had to live at home. On the other hand, classmates who expected to start at professional level salaries are mostly still looking. So if you can swing that somehow, you could be in good shape!

<soapbox rant>
The good IT jobs have gone overseas.
Been involved in that fiasco for a while now.

Why pay a NA person 65000$ + benefits for a IT job when someone in India will do the same job for 6500$ and no benefits.
NA person still bitching about wanting more, India person happy as punch to be at the top end of their wage scale.

The globalization through the internet has leveled the world for access to many jobs, and the lowest bidder wins.
Now even India is beginning to worry, as China is starting to come online to compete for the same jobs..

Look at almost any product you have and check the made in label.
Most likely China, especially if you shop in places like walmart that almost exclusively source their product form there.

Did it to ourselves, wanting everything for the cheapest we could get it and dam what it did to anyone else.
</soapbox rant.>

Sorry about the rant, having been in IT for decades it is quite a sore point with me.

I too have been jobless since September. I worked for an ad agency that is in the automobile industry and well, car dealerships are spending less each month. Some have even gone out of business. Still no job interviews for all of my applications. I am doing ok mentally, which is what is important, so it isn't as bad as it could be.

I own a business (digital printing) and have definitely felt the crunch. I am thinking that any businesses that can hang on will come out the other side much stronger, so I am just tightening my belt and waiting to see what happens. Fortunately, I have a second part time job as a 3d animator that pays the bills since I haven't paid myself for over 6 months, but I gotta say, the excessive hours are getting to me. I am getting too old to be working 16 hour days when the 3d projects are on.

A lot of finance jobs are going overseas as well as IT (peterp's point). Four of our 5 person audit team from our CPA firm were interns from the Philippines. If they pass the CPA exam here, they get a 2nd year internship to meet the experience requirement (MS in Accounting + 2 years supervised audit experience). In any event, they all go back to the Philippines where they work for finance outsource firms.

More and more, US companies auditors are forming partnerships with these outsource companies. They then convince their US clients to dump some or even all of their in house accounting people and have the functions taken over off shore. The reason is obvious: 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of hiring the same staff here (salary + benefits considered).

Given other people I know in the field, at age 56 I could well be out of a job now if I hadn't reached CFO level somewhere. As in IT, there's getting to be a bigger gap by the year between senior exec level and the lowest level non-outsourceable jobs.

In fact, I never did reach CFO level but fell into a great deal as customer service manager for a film industry vendor. At least for 2009, the studios are still adamant that all vendor services by US based, mostly within 50 miles of Hollywood -- no exceptions, no discussion. But quite a few of my friends still (theoretically) in finance are unemployed and most at the point of believing any future professional employment is unlikely for them.

Yeah... I was laid off the end of October. I worked for a company in the financial field. I made it through the group who lost their job through outsourcing. But, I didn't make it through the automation. So I was "transitioned"...

I really didn't like the job anyway... but I was trying to leave on my own terms. I really do believe that one of the factors of the current economic crisis is the greed of the financial sectors.

Hello Barry Pullis and All,

I finally returned to work on tuesday{yesterday]
my lay-off, it put a major dent in future guitar

employment, not much worthwile was out there.
Hopefully things will be better in'09.

I'm glad to be back at work.
