1). I cannot understand why Fender spends so much time on making "vintage" look instruments like the new Road Worn series. Why anyone who has a hard enough time scraping cash together for an instrument would want to pay for a beat-up guitar with 40-year-old ergonomics is beyond me. So much advancement in playability and electronics have been made, especially in instruments for under $1,000, that it seems absurd to pay a premium price for an new "old" guitar.

2). Fender could greatly improve their website by emulating a couple of things from competitors. Lakland has done two simple things on their website that really present their instruments better. First, they have sound clips! Wow, who would have thought that a company that sells audio-producing equipment might want to have audio on the site. Secondly, (a personal pet peeve on the Fender site) Lakland runs their product shots horizontally (i.e., you can see the instrument in a normal playing position). Again, wow, who would have thought that a long/narrow picture (like an instrument-shot) should run horizontally on a computer monitor which (shazammm) are wide and narrow. Duh.

3). When is Fender going to produce a bass guitar with the pickup combination that rules them all: one Jazz and one MM. So many other companies are already producing instruments in this configuration for the obvious reasons. If there is some sort of bad blood between Fender and Ernie Ball - who cares? Come on Fender - just do it. I promise you won't lose money.

4). Now, about that Fender 6-string bass that everyone is waiting on...

Well, that's a little harsh don't you think? People pay thousands for custom shop relics, so this is just a cheap version. Fender will impress you. You just have to wait.

These are all good suggestions.

Apropos #4, I'd love to see them reissue the old Bass VI:

I would like to see Fender produce a really light guitar, kinda like that Parker Fly Mark Farner uses which weighs only around 5 lbs.

While I'm no fan of relics, and that's just a personal choice. 40 year old ergonomics are the cats pajamas. Vintage Fender Fretboard radius, and frets are where it's at. I think Fender strives to make basses in every level to please people of both persuasion. People who dig the way guitars and basses were built in the old days, and the newer models. Heck, the hotrod series of guitars combines both, right?

While I don't like active basses, the absense of a bass with a J/Bucker combo does seem a bit odd. Especially with the fact that you can get a P/Bucker (MIA P Bass Deluxe), and the Bucker alone (Big Block P Bass). However, I'd say that the majority of players who like those types of basses look elsewhere, so the market may not be as big as you'd think.

Then again, what do I know? I think a single coil P Bass is still the pick up configuration that rules them all.

The Bass VI is such an under-rated, fun, versatile, hip and fun instrument (not to mention, in sunburst, farking 6-foot-tall supermodel-gorgeous), it deserves MIM and Squier issues. And the attention of quadzillions of both guitar and bass players.

Bass VI is the tenor saxaphone of guitars.

But maybe Fender has done their homework and thinks it won't sell wide enough, which might well be true.

While I don't have a problem with vintage, as I do see its place as many people prefer not to pay authentic vintage prices, or take their chances on something thats counterfeit vintage. I do think Fender maybe has gone a bit overboard with the relic/road worn thing, and when the wave of this trend/fad subsides, I could see Fender briefly having having to tread water a bit much like companies like BC Rich, Kramer, and Jackson/Charvel had to in the mid 90s when many people were not interested in pointy shaped, Floyd Rose bridged, and/or florescent painted guitars. I do think now that they are here, there will always be an interest and a small market for relic finished guitars, but I don't think its going to always be as huge as it seems to be now.

I don't know, would the American auto industry be better off financially then they are now if they offered...
ROAD WORN CARS?
Image

Would the housing/mortgage industry be better off if the offered relic'd houses?

I think with the way the economy is uncertain, I think people may soon find it ridiculous to spend a lot of money on something brand new that looks like you should have spent money on something brand new...

What you're saying seems to make sence, but I don't think Fender is in any danger. I have a feeling they under produce any new line of guitar, if it takes off, they up production and start filling out back orders.

There's a Demand for worn out looking guitars, so Fender tapped the Market. If there was a Demand for Worn Out houses there would be a Market for them. And if you're waiting for the consumer to realize their buying worn out stuff when they could be buying nice new stuff, look around your favorite clothing store at all the "Distressed" pants and jackets that have been selling like hot-cakes for nearly a decade now.

Nicely done bowlfreshener, and good points FirstMeasure.
I personally do not like the idea of buying a new relic'd guitar.

My wife wants to remodel the bathroom - my new position is that it is a "relic" and should be left alone. Would mold be considered part of being a relic?????
