Whenever this subject comes up I ask for two things. The first is a cavity bodied Strat. Simplicity itself to produce on modern CNC machines: Tyler do a hollow S-type at the top of the market, and there's even chambered Epiphone Les Pauls now. C'mon, Fender!

The other thing is a reissue or update of the Fender Performer model. OK, not mad for the headstock, but the rest has a sort of alien chic to my eye. Kind of a Parker Fly for those of us not quite brave enough to buy the Fly itself:

BTW: Googling for a picture of a Performer I found this and several others all belonging to none other than our own AlainlaFrance! Mais naturellement.

Merci - C

You might be on to something with the chambered Strat idea. That intrigues me.

The pic of the "Performer" only confirms my opinion that making an existing body style "pointy" or "skewing" its curves doesn't make it a new model. Fender made a number of these "new" designs when they were trying to unload old unused parts of other guitars. Google the Fender "Swinger" or the Fender "Custom" and you'll see 2 other examples of this type of useless "new model".

I'm sure it's a great playing guitar, but to my eye it's just an ugly Strat "knock off". And WOW does that pointy headstock look cheap.

Fender makes beautifully designed instruments now. The form fits the function and that's as it should be. They don't need to $@!&# themselves to the market place by reinventing the wheel. I fully support sensible design enhancements if they make a guitar BETTER, but just doing something to put a new item on the shelf . . . .

Hi mthorn00. Yeah, I agree with most of what you say, especially about the headstock.

And yet there was always something about that body that tickled my fancy - no accounting for taste! Wasn't in the market for one at the time, and given that most people seemed to share your distaste for it Fender dropped it pretty fast.

About the same time they also did a sort of flying V with one of the legs chopped off. The Katana, was it called? To my own complete amazement I quite like that one too - and I normally hate shape guitars!

Go figure...

Cheers - C

Should have known that Alain had one. I wonder how many people come across Alain's name when googling?! Guitars that is!

Not one, Hop: he has several! And they didn't make very many of that model!

Now I can tell this thread is going to fill up with folks saying how ugly they think it is, some Fender exec will glance in, take note - and my chances of a reissue will dwindle into dust! Oh well...

 How about a site where you can pick your options from a list of already made parts and get a NON CUSTOM SHOP guitar bolted together the way you want it for a reasonable price.

Thats how I ordered my Jeep, why can't fender do that too! I'd love that!

Chambered Strat? Perhaps a reissue of the Esprit? A Robben Ford lives sort of thing? Now that I could go for!

In this opinion, Fender has a magnificent product line and has to continually try new ideas.

Chances are, for every one new product which surfaces, there are fifty which sounded like a good idea but had way, way too limited of sales potential.

Ceri, I actually think the Performer looks great! I've always loved the look of the Parker Fly (not to mention the sound), but that does remind me of the Fly. So heres a vote for it - hopefully that Fender exec scrolls downs a bit more!
