Hi,
My situation now dictates that I cannot get around playing gigs anymore.
Past life caught up with me I'm afraid. Now I've got this bronchitis thing. During the past year I mostly played on my own in the house but now I'm starting to get 'itchy' to do something again, that unquenchable thirst for playing music with others, stays for life I guess.
I've heard some of you guys talking about Praise bands and it's got me wondering if that is the road I could take now.
I would have to put the band together myself, which would basically mean anybody and everybody that wants to join in and that, to me, sounds like fun. No money involved, no pressure, no ego's to stroke.......brilliant.
There is a church hall, right at the end of my street which I might be able to use and no travel involved, which would be great.
I haven't spoken to anyone about it yet, it's still in the 'thinking' phase.
I have a fair amount of gear that can be used and others could bring some stuff to get it up and running.
Anyway, getting to the point (eventually) I haven't a clue what music you guys play, so if you fella's could clue me in I would greatly appreciate that.
So that's it really.
What music do you praise band guys play? can you give me examples?
Thanks a lot for any help.

My experience of praise bands is that belief and adherence to the churches doctrines are a prerequisite that no church will budge on. Regular attendance, baptism, Tithing (less than 1.5% of the population of the uk tithe) will undoubtedly be expected. Then expect to be limited on output and have your work under close scrutiny.

Based on the couple people I know who are involved, praise bands are usually associated with one particular church though they may also travel to public Christian events and/or other churches. As nikininja says, you'd probably have to be a member of that or a related church to start with.

They tend to be associated with evangelical/fundamentalist/"born again" churches but others have them too. They can be controversial and limited to youth services in more conservative churches.

There are also Christian recording artists and that would probably be a good place to start searching for "what" to play. I'm not familiar with the artists but probably googling something like "contemporary christian music" or "christian artist" would work.

From what little else I know, the instrumentation is generally along lines of rock to folk rock in flavor. There may be some metal Christian bands as well and there are some with a decidedly country (at least in the US).

That has been my thought as well that a Praise Band is associated with a particular church.

Now what you might want to consider as an alternative is what my friends and I are doing. We are practicing real hard (well sort of) and are going to play at retirement homes on weekends. Namely oldies stuff and some classic country and western tunes. Not exactly my genre of music, but I am looking forward to it. There is no money involved and we are just doing to serve the community in a positive way and have fun at the same time. Now my band mates are from my church, but this isn't a "Church" function. Just some old guys getting together to jam and have some fun.

It is gonna be cool to see Grandma and Grampa clapping and tapping their toes!

Rhumba, if you feel a pull to go and do it mate, then go and do it. Enquire at a local pentecostal church. It is lots of fun. Inbetween times of my jaded past ive been involved in church worship bands. Its a lot of fun, just not the rock n roll you may be used to.

Rhumba,

I've been playing in my church's praise band for about 4 years. The great part about it is the constant change and challenge in music. Our music director hardly ever schedules the same song but a couple of times a year, so there is lots of variety.

I confess (no punn intended) that the band in this case is tied to our church, however, here in the states we have a lot of coffee house Christian bands that play acoustic and low volume electric Christian music at Coffee shops. I am not sure these even exist in the UK. Hopefully they do.

Good luck with this.

I would say that chances are, the church probably has one. If not, it's been considered and denied because they are to conservative. You might as well talk to the pastor about it though. I'm assuming you are christian, but you've got to be pretty serious about it, as a praise leader.

If you do form the praise band, you could cover songs by HillSongsUnited, JesusCulture, Casting Crowns, Jars of Clay, or Misty Edwards (all of which I love).

A lot of churches will generally have more then one praise band who play on different nights of the week. Make sure you are familiar the doctines of the church where you want to start a band. Some denominations don't believe in instruments in their worship, (i.e. Church of Christ, etc.), where others tend to be at the other end of this spectrum, (Penticostal, Vinyard, Calvary Chapel, etc.). Your band might need to start at a point where you will only be playing maybe one Wednesday per month. This can be a good thing where you'll have plenty of time to practice between performances. The church band I am hooking up with plays once about every five or six weeks generally on Wednesday nights and has practice every Thursday.
