I think if you play both you may be surprised. Nothing beats a good Stratocaster in your hands.

With that being said, go for the Gibson

I've always felt very comfortable with Strats. The tone, the controls, the neck, the body contour, the weight, the looks, the way you can customize them if you want - they're just the perfect guitar for me.

I tried to like Gibsons, but they're just not me. They too heavy, cumbersone feeling, and I'm not a fan of the baseball bat neck.

Also, I don't like cheap or "value" things - at all. I appreciate and will pay for high quality gear. But Gibsons, to me, are WAY overpriced for what they are. Almost 3k? For a Les Paul? Ridiculous. Not even close to being worth that much in my opinion. Maybe 1200-1800 or so - tops. I'll pay that much for a custom guitar, or for a good PRS (love the 513 and Custom 24), but not for a simple Les Paul.

If you can afford it--sure.

but it all depends what you like to play musically, and what guitar feels right in your hands.

I am a believer that you need to click with a guitar before it's yours--so I've picked up thousands of guitars in music stores, but haven't bought anywhere near that many.

When a guitar "speaks" to you & you can afford it--it's right.

Unfortunately I've had some speak to me that I couldn't afford, but I am very happy with what I have.

(Of the choices I prefer Les Pauls--and own one, but I also like SG's & Strats. I find Teles uncomfortable, but like what people lie Roy Buchanan do with them. If I buy one of the four in the future--since I have a Les Paul, I'd probably get a Strat--although I do love my Mustang.)

I'd say a good telecaster. Can't really go wrong. So much versitility in such a nonassuming package. Crazy, it truly is.

go play all of them at guitar center or something, and a bunch of different ones (not just one tele on strat, one sg and on LP but multiples. all guitars are different) and then buy the one you like the feel of most.

if i had a choice and did not have to worrie about money at all i would deffinately buy the gibson LP (totally serius you guys, i'm not kidding) i have always found that the gibson neck profiles feel better in my hands. and i just like LPs better. i would get a les paul custom in black with gold hardware, 3 pickups, and a bigsby.

oh and if you do go to guitar center or a similar store if they have one check out a gibson johnny A signature guitar. if i had the choice of any guitar i would get one of those. they sound very cool, kind cleaner when you play lightly but they crunch up and get kinda distorted when you play heavy. also, it might just be that i have big hands but when i played one it had this nice big neck that was perfect.

so definaately try one of those but i cant tell you what to get. the finall decision is yours. get the one that feels best in your hands. don't let some one tell you which to get.

MY ANSWER TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION IS, "YES"

That said, each is a fine instrument, with unique qualities.

Play all, fine what moves you, speaks to you......

I would in any case run them all through fender tube amps

WHAT THE $@!& ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!! gibson electrics are awsome! the aucoustics are good too, i dont play aucoustic though. but how can any one say gibson electrics aren't that great, thats ... thats like... i dont know? i cant even think of something to compare that to it's so messed up! i dont know whats wrong with you stryder, i mean i know people are intitled to their own opinion and i would have been fine with something like "i dont like gibson electrics cause the neck is to fat for mea" or something like that. but to say they are in general not good guitars is stupid and wrong.

Both companies make great guitars... let's face it. Fender and Gibson have the body styles that most other companies copy. I think that Fender has the most choices, though at a lower price point.

I've been playing the same Tele for 38 years now. I also own a MIM Strat with noiseless pickups and am quite satisfied.

Although, I think my next new guitar is gonna be an SG.

It's up to you, tho'... right?

Play em all man! Both make great guitars and I switch depending on my mood. At the moment its my MIM surf green 50's Classic and my natural Casino. Tomorrow who knows as long as you're inspired to play.
Here's some of my babies.

Hi Gatorguitar, there's one thing I wanted to say. If you try a few guitars from such and such brands, try to compare guitars from the same price range. Don't try a fight between a 3000 bucks brand X against a 500 bucks brand Z. You already heard some good advices from the forum members, don't rush it, try a lot of guitars, compare them on the same level (quality/price) and choose wisely. 8)
Good luck.

Claude.

Hi,
I have 5 Fenders and 5 Gibsons, they all do different jobs, they all sound different, play different and they are all great guitars. Have a collection of both and have a menagerie of tonal dreams. Rock on man.
Cheers
