49. I'm just now starting. I bought a guitar (acoustic) 15 years ago, but when my 1st son was born with disabilities, it went into the closet until this year when my youngest son started showing interest in guitars. So, I got him a guitar, and have pulled mine out, and am gonna learn with him. He has since been given a Mini Strat by a friend as well, so he has an acoustic and an electric.

I think I started playing when I was 12, but I took it seriously from 13/14 on.
I'm 15 now haha, so I guess I've been really playing for about 2, 1.5 years I guess.
I think I'm pretty good in relation to my total playing-time :D

I had the same experience with the Rolling Stones, except I had to buy my guitar myself. The guitar was not recognized as being a "valid" instrument in my home. When I did start playing, my grandmother was telling people I was learning the accordion!!!!

So, when I was 8, My grandma gave me an old Honer (spelling) Classical Guitar. I plunked and plunked on it (like an 8 year old will do) I broke so many strings it was pitiful. However, I have been buying cheap guitars ever since. I have improved, but i have not had any real instruction. I have taken 2 classes total in my lifetime. (which usually was an intro with the teacher) Im getting scales down, and Im starting to improve, but i really wish that I could devote more time to it.
anyway,
technically Ive been playing since 8 years old. Emphasis on the word play.

I started when I was 12, so now it's six years (nearly seven). I'm sure most people will know what I mean when I say I can't ever remember not playing Guitar, or what that felt like.

I see that a few of you started in your 50's and must say, "Good for you!" It is NEVER too late to learn.

I'll second that! It's a great hobby, especially if you don't have unrealistic expectations for yourself. It's also one of those things in life where you create your own accomplishments and the results can be heard. As the line in the song goes (paraphrased) "... and they can't take that away from you ...!"

I started at age 15 back in 1967 and played in bands, etc. for the next 10 years. But then marriage and career put the guitar in the back of the cloest for many years. So when I decided to pick it up again in 1998, it was almost like starting over again. While I still remembered the chord forms, etc., my fingers hadn't done "things like that" in years and I didn't even remember a single song from back when.

Started up at 14 (real close before I was 15). Started taking lessons a few months later. I'm 16 now. May have been playing for a year, but I'm terrible. I'd expect no less. 9 or 10 more years I may know something.

i started in 94ish but once jr high-high school came i stopped. In 2008 i bought a jaguar hh special and ive been playing ever since, its kinda hard with school and work, but i do make time to play. Even if im not fantastic, i enjoy it and i am learning something new.

since then i own a esp ltd kh 202 and a jim root telecaster as i love the sounds that these guitars produce.
