I got my first guitar (a Squier Strat I still play and love) at age 11. At the time I was playing classical flute and I had just discovered I like rock better than Classical and Country so I desperately wanted to play electric guitar. I continued on flute until I couldn't take it anymore, I was 13. So one day I picked up my guitar and just started playing. I taught myself for a year, and then I hit a point where I almost gave up because I didn't think I was going anywhere. So I got lessons and have been on the right track since. Now I also play bass and drums and I'm beginning to be able to play by ear. I haven't touched my flute since I started guitar.

Started playing at 16 (in 1968) and I'm another "took 12 lessons, quit and now regret it" case. But I was too much in a hurry to learn some music and get into a band. I accomplished that and we became quite successfully (though no recordings) in the late 60s - mid 70s.

Then marriage and a job got into the mix so I pretty much ignored the guitar until I got hooked into playing in several community musicals in the mid 80s. That was for charity and fun but then once again, corporate life pushed the axe back into the closet.

I got back into in 1998 when I took my old electric that hadn't been touched in almost 15 years out of the closet. It was a rainy (yes, it does here in SoCal) afternoon, I was bored stiff so I wanted to see what I could still do with it. Not much ... strings rusty, skills even more so. But then people who knew me encouraged me to keep at it in that they could (as a good friend put it) "once must have been pretty good."

Now, I've even worked back up to jamming with a couple people now and then. Who knows -- I may end my "career" the way I started it -- on the stage rather than looking up at it. I sure wouldn't complain!

I was 12 as well... I took private lessons until I was 19. That summer, my teacher never showed up and I didn't see him for two months. Then, I received a phone call from him out of the blue. He told me that the reason I didn't hear from him was he got married.

I wished him well, and hung up.

I figured I was good enough to play rock n' roll. It was a bad move on my part. He was a good teacher.

I think it's best to start at a younger age and to build up your knolege from there.

I first started when I was around 16, my Dad bought me a '79 Strat. :) I played with friends for a few years, stopped playing for quite a few years, then took it up again about three years ago with a bit more of a serious approach. If I have one regret in life it's that I didn't keep up with it all of these years, I absolutely LOVE playing. :D

I had seen the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's Show and life was never the same afterwards. I hounded my parents until they gave me my first guitar for Christmas when I was 10.

I started at 16 with my first high school job. I took lessons for about 15 months. I took it very seriously and wanted to get a good start with good habits. My teacher was really good and I progressed quickly. Once I got my first Strat, I started developing my own style.

Now I'm going on 53, and can say some of the best moments in my life were playing in my band. I've gotten much further that I ever thought I could in my proficiency. I like it when people tell me something I want to do can't be done. Proving them wrong is always something to be relished . . .

I started about 1&1/2 years ago playing a little here a little there then got my strat and can't put it down. I mainly play in the spirit band at church and love playing the Blues at home along with some AC/DC. Yes I know I shouldn't like AC/DC doesn't really go well with church but I like the sound and don't pay too much attention to the lyrics. Love my Classic 60's in Lake Placid Blue. [/img]
I started at age 14, but didn't take it too seriously until a few years later.

I actually started when I was 14. That would have been 1965. I wanted to play at a much younger age but being a lefty I was not able to find a teacher who would teach me. My Mom trid to find one but back then they all wanted righties only. Looking back I cannot see why it was such an issue. Well, as the years went by I finally got my first instrument in 65 and bought a Duane Eddy album, a book of chords and taught myself.

I see that a few of you started in your 50's and must say, "Good for you!" It is NEVER too late to learn. I have a good friend that is in management at Fender and her never learned to play. Even though he has a museum of some rare and unproduced prototype and one off items. Anyway, he finally decided to learn a few years ago. I have not visited with him much since he was transfered from Corona, Ca. to Scottsdale so I haven't heard how he has progressed. But again, it is NEVER too late to start finding the real enjoyment of playing a musical instrument.
