Everyone know the standard guitar tuning is E-A-D-G-B-E. I would like to play some some songs with the guitar tuned down one whole step (D-G-C-F-A-D). Does anyone know of a product (stompbox or other) that will detune my guitar one whole step on the fly?. I only want to lower the tuning, or return the guitar to normal tuning. NO EFFECTS.

there are some bass guitar which use
a lever to lower the E string to D
you might need 6 of those that fit your guitar
or tune and retune manually
maybe with the help of a tuner

hit the 6 open strings and remember how the pitch sound
at each tuning mode

after sometime you can do without the tuner

I have a tuner made by KORG, it cost $15. I have one of my Strats tuned down a half step. This tuner lets you tune down much more than that if you like.

Hi rmaddelein: if it's a gizmo you're wanting you could try one of these multi-tuning bridges. Any tuning you want at the flick of a lever (or two):

Personally, I'd rather toss my Strat off a cliff than let one of those near it - but each to his own.

A second guitar might be a prefered option: now you have a good excuse!

Cheers - C

I have been tuning all of my guitars 1-full step down for several years now and love it. I say just tune it down, and keep it down...If you play live a lot, just get a 2nd guitar for the alternate tuning cause people won't want to wait while you tune the entire guitar. Minor tuning tweaks here and there are fine, but don't make them sit through "soundcheck" during your performance...Or maybe look into that Robot Gibson that tunes automatically if you have a couple thousand dollars to spend...

fender actually made a guitar with a knob that will detune your guitar without detuning it

If you want all strings tuned down, I recommend tuning a step lower, and playing in standard tuning using a capo at the second fret. If you want to play a step lower, take the capo off.
