to get the surf sound, you play high, with a little bit of overdrive and reverb, right?

and fast, downwards slides ofcourse, like in miserlou

When it came out on VHS I bought that Stupid Movie just so I could hear that version of Pipeline over and over (I couldn't find the soundtrack anywhere).

It's on "Better Shred Than Dead: The Best of Dick Dale".

Single coil------------Fender Reverb tank--------------clean Fender tube amp. That's all you need.

Check out The Astronauts. One of the many land-locked surf rock bands, helping to prove the nation-wide love for and to play surf rock. They hailed from Boulder, Colorado (just up the raod from me). Probably best known for their tune 'Baja.'

Baja - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tDHSm-_BdM

Firewater - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO_pOYfsJk4

Rock the World - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9XLG6-ipdM&feature=related

Hang loose!

One thought for those who may not be thoroughly reverb-drenched:

Truism: Surf MUSIC is instrumental. Period.

Surfing SONGS have vocals.

(It's below zero F and snowy-icy in Chicago and thinking about beaches and surf and guitar is a way of mentally escaping. Thanks, folks.)

Errrrrr......mostly. Probably closer to say that surf is primarily instrumental. Any vocals that are added are the exception rather than the rule. There are a few bands that sing a little (The Ghastly Ones), but there is a strong instrumental portion to their music. Dick Dale has had a couple of songs that he sings on. Better terms would be 'surf' and 'surf pop'.

I really dig Dick Dale. He pretty much invented surf style guitar.

Hi Staredge,

'Was quoting the definitions from a short-run hardbound book on surf guitar groups, seconded by an article thereon in Vintage Guitar a few years back.

'Agree there are a few pieces of surf music with vocals. The scream at the beginning of "Wipeout" is the briefest and most well known, a close second being "Six Pack" by The Sandals in the original Endless Summer soundtrack.

To your point, for example, the bridges in "Going To Malibu" (The Malibooz) and "Blind" (Hapa) are top quality surf music in a mostly vocal track, for really sure, Dude.

It's kinda like defining 'metal'. Hard to use the same classification with 80's hair metal and, say, death metal. Two discs in my collection (albeit a small collection), the Ghastly Ones and Monsters from the Surf, have a number of vocal tracks. Zombie Surf Camp has vocals, although they bill themselves as surf punk. (yet another classification) There definitely is a difference, though, between instrumental surf and Beach Boys style pop.

Fun to argue about though!!!!!

Surf music wasn't my favorite music back when it was popular and still isn't however that didn't stop us from making a surf album. Back in 63 I was in a band called the "rhythm Crusaders" . We new a guy that had a record label and he had bought some early tracks by Dick Dale. He only had about 4 tracks and wanted to put out an album capitalizing on Dales name so he hired us to fill out the album. We went in the studio and just jamed for a couple of hours and the next thing I knew the album was out and we had been billed as the "Hollywwod surfers" {sounds kind of !@$ today]. The album never went anywhere then but has now become kind of a cult recording for old school surf guitar nuts.. I never got any money for the album besides the $20.00 each for the studio time, which wasn't bad pay back then. We usually made $20.00 each for 5 hour gig so $20.00 for 2 hours was great. I didn't even get a promo copy of the album, I had to buy mine which I still have.

I'm not a big fan, but when I was a young lad my guitar teacher made me learn Pipeline, Walk Don't Run, Telstar and others as assigments. They were better than some of the other stuff I had to learn. But, I was into the British Invasion bands by then.

No I haven't got around to listening to it yet. My record player {or turn table for you kids} is not hooked up and I just can't seem to get to it.
{records for you young uns were those shiny black plastic things with the hole in the middle}
I have gone on to a real insurance policy for the guitar although I don't know if thats any better than my previous method.
