That's a very cool link, I've never heard of surf music until now. I'm watching a vid now, it sounds like an episode of batman  Great stuff tho, cheers.

The theme from Batman sounds like "spy music" which is very similar to Surf. Songs like "Secret Agent" by Johnny Rivers and, of course, the James Bond theme that they play before every 007 movie are good examples.

On Tuesday I will be making a trip to the local used CD store to search for some of the recommendations you all have given me. I will keep you updated as to my success. I did find some lessons on You Tube too but I need to get the feel from some of the artists mentioned.

Dick Dale

No better place to start.

About eight seconds of searching has failed to find me a Dick Dale DVD but if there's one out there it might be worth a shot, in addition to audio. He can be great to watch as well as listen to.

Cheers - C

Saw Dick live a few years ago on Hollywood Beach. He was in his late 60s then and he was playing guitar with his son who was in his early teens !?!?

Dick has been fighting colon cancer and has done almost no touring in 2008. He's been in and out of the hospital for surgery, chemo and radiation treatments.

Yeah, Stratman Steve took care of the basics in the first reply. The Shadows are pretty cool too, but not exactly Surf.

Good live Surf Music almost Hurts it's so clean. I've always wanted one of these just to play surf.

'Surf' covers a lot of territory. More than a few bands are classified as surf, but are more. (Laika & the Cosmonauts, for one)

All you need for surf is a single coil Fender (Strat or JM, arguments are strong on both sides), Fender reverb tank, and a nice clean Fender amp. Live is incredible. I'm going to see Slacktone in February. Saw Laika and Los Straitjackets last year. That was an awesome show. Try the Los Straitjackets DVD.

Surf music is holy, to this writer / picker.

Surfing is to all practical purposes the only sport with its own genre of music. One which is 50 years old and ALIVE! And hundreds, if not thousands of titles deep.

(What song titles can you quick think of about (each) Lacrosse, Snag fishing, Synchronized Swimming and Curling?)

Thanks for the link to surfguitar 101, it's been posted as a favourite.

Suggestion on getting into the music: THE SUF BOX, a 4-CD set and there's a not-bad disk in the Starbucks CD offerings. Otherwise, shop the compilation CDs for a taste of the genre's depth and breadth.

Further on Surf Music (not surfing songs) is it led this picker to many other forms of melody-line guitar playing. Pop, lounge, jazz, island, blues, even classical and world.

'Been playing Surf for decades and will life-long, though marooned on the mainland in the midwest.

Best of fortune on your own surf music adventures.

I saw Dick Dale 10 years ago. The opening act was a local surf band called the Thrusters I became a big fan of both. :)
I pray for his speedy recovery.

Jack Johnson. He actually used to be a professional surfer. He plays a telecaster. Really good stuff there... He's from Hawaii. Very light and upbeat with a jazz filled voice. I like it.

Barneldo from Hapa is a pretty hot surf guitarist, too. He plays a Mosrite, the "other" perfect surf guitar (along with Strat, JAZZMASTER and Jaguar.

'Personally, 'think a Mosrite for surf guitar is basically what you get if you put fuel injection and a supercharger on a Fender.

When it came out on VHS I bought that Stupid Movie just so I could hear that version of Pipeline over and over (I couldn't find the soundtrack anywhere).
