OK - I see that Stratmansteve is a surf music guru. Anyone have suggestions as to what would be a good first step in artist / album choice? I have no clue where to start but I am intrigued.............

Wow!! I don't know if I'm a surf rock guru, but I like the genre a lot. I had come across an unfinished song project (I have lots of those), a surf instrumental I started in '06 so I had the Devlar internet radio station playing for inspiration to finish it.

If you're looking for instrumentals, I would start with the classics:
Chantays - Pipeline
Ventures - Walk, Don't Run
Dick Dale - Misirlou (can be heard in the film, "Pulp Fiction")
Sufaris - Wipe Out (When I was 10, this was the song your guitar skills were measured by. The bar is set a little higher today.)

Strap on your Strat, Jag or Jazzmaster, switch to the bridge pup, turn up the reverb, add tremelo to taste, and let 'er rip!!

Check out Dick Dale or The Ventures.

Any record, but try a greatest hits pkg.

Dick Dale

No better place to start.

About eight seconds of searching has failed to find me a Dick Dale DVD but if there's one out there it might be worth a shot, in addition to audio. He can be great to watch as well as listen to.

Cheers - C

Might I suggest, if you haven't found us already:

http://www.surfguitar101.com

Come on in, the water's fine!!!!

Some of my favorites:

Slacktone
Daikaiju
Los Straitjackets
The Madeira
The Razorblades
Pollo Del Mar
Atomic Mosquitos
Insect Surfers

and a few more I probably forgot.

If you have iTunes, look up the Coconut Wired podcast. SG101 also has a podcast which is fantastic. It's a great website.

I picked up a great CD collection at Starbucks a while back called Big Waves: Five Decades of Surf Rock.

Now that's the kind of topping I like on my double espresso skinny latte...

Not a bad lineup. I forgot to put Laika & the Cosmonauts on my list. They played their farewell tour last fall. Excellent show.

It was supposed to have died by now, but Devlar Surf Sessions is still available (as of earlier today) on live365.com. Great way to get exposed to lots of different bands.

Yeah, Stratman Steve took care of the basics in the first reply. The Shadows are pretty cool too, but not exactly Surf.

Good live Surf Music almost Hurts it's so clean. I've always wanted one of these just to play surf.
