My opinion is that bass heads are used and needed for bass cabinets. You can't have one without the other.

These are my fave bass amps of all time.

I wish Fender would reissue these since I think they still own the rights.
At least put out the original 2000s, Coliseum 300 and Model T.

For now I use Gallien-Krueger.

If you mean "in comparison to combo units," they're obviously more flexible and you can get higher power levels. On the other hand, for occasional jamming and small venues, you may find combos more convenient. I have a Bassman 210/250 that's very portable and with enough power for a small room, rehearsal or mic'ing.

But if you're planning on doing large venues, you will probably need to get a separate head for the power level. Some bassists will also use more than one to get entirely different tones for different songs, whereas (not that you couldn't) I've never seen anyone play with more than one combo.

I used to use a Peavey 210TX combo on top of the Peavy TNT115 so I could take advantage of the bi-amp option.

Never gigged with it, but worked well in the rehearsal space.
Kept up with a Marshall stack and a very loud drummer.
