Can someone tell me how to achieve the blues tone that Eric has with the Strat? I'm talking of the tone of songs like "Have you ever loved a woman" or "Five long years". :)

mid boost has a lot to do with it. its not all of it though. Try a boss 10 band eq. You can emphasize the low mids more than you can with a 7 band.

Then just put about 30 years of practice into your vibrato and playing with only the index and mid fingers above the 10th fret. Also if you watch EC he's completely relaxed at all times when playing. Its like he either just doesnt care if he fluffs something up, or he's so confident that he knows he wont.

Since this topic has come up before on other threads and there are people who feel passionately about the subject, I'm going to take the easy route and suggest you cheat . . .

Hurry! Looks like they're being discontinued.

i have been in search of this current tone as well. and i have found it!!!!
heres is what you need
Strat with the clapton mid-boost pre amp circuit
Lace gold (or Hot Gold) sensors
57' twin tube amp

and.....
EC's left hand!!!

i have a strat with the midboost and hot golds and the tone you get through a tube amp sounds just like this clip

If you are looking at the version of "Five Long Years" on "From The Cradle", you're going to be looking for a heavily boosted mid-range tone. I've always considered this track his tribute to Buddy Guy in that the 'feel' is similar to that on a track of his.

With respects to 'Have You Ever Loved A Woman", this is a Freddy King song which Eric made his own, and Eric's earlier recording of this carry more of a vintage Strat tone in keepiin with Freddy's approach to the song.

Doc

A thicker set of strings will give you a deeper tone also.

He used Vintage Noiseless pickups and used Lace Sensor pickups also, so that might make a small contribution to get his tone. He did use a mid boost like someone already posted here. :)

These are 2nd and 1st generation pickups respectively for the Signature Series guitar which has a midboost circuit and a thicker tone even with the boost rolled off.

Prior to that, the vintage Blackie, first used at "The Rainbow Concert", had served as the main stage and recording guitar after Derrick and the Dominoes. It is this guitar of which I speak, and the following, which provided Eric's vintage Strat sounds.

The "Brownie" served prior to that date and after 'Cream'. It can be seen on his first solo recording..."Eric Clapton".

Yep.....that's Eric...lost in the blues. Same vibe as that when he 'took off' during the late nite blues set during the Chicago "Crossroads". A Proco Rat will also give you enough boost and sustain for that tone, as well.

I believe you've solved the problem, especially the left hand and amp part!

Nah....we already know you are limited to the '57 Tweed. It's alleged discoverer of the Holy Grail we ask this of.
