I am just wondering if record companies are trying to turn us off buying cd's for whatever reason.
I have a very big cd collection and have never encountered problem discs in all my previous purchases.
This christmas betwen myself and my wife we got 8 cd's. 4 of them are faulty, either skipping or plain refuse to pay. One of them jammed the cd player and wouldnt eject.

Are they trying to get us just to download or is it my suspicuous mind

Although this sounds like another conspiracy theory (and I'm usually against those), I really agree with you.
I got some CD's too, for Sinterklaas (some sort of christmas), and one of them made weird noises in the 3rd song. I tried multiple CD players, and I looked for scratches and stuff, but it still didn't work and I didn't find any scratches.

really really weird...
By the way, all the others CD's I got worked fine.

In the past month, I've bought one CD and received six... all of them worked fine.

Selling faulty CDs just means the companies have to replace them or refund you - if they wanted you to download, they would reduce the number of CDs available.

I'd be more curious as to whether the discs were pressed at the same factory. There's some way that you can use the code from the inner edge of the disc and determine where it was made, but I don't know details.

I think it's due to the use of cheaper digital encoding machines in the mass production of the CD's.

Hello Jaiyenyen,

I'm in full agreement with Mthorn00,
higher production lower quality.
I'll stop here or I'll go on an
organized labor rant. :x

Cheers

i'd go with the poorer quality theory. same thing happened to vinyl back in the day. in the early '80's i'd look for german imports because the quality of the vinyl was far superior to the junk they were using in the states.
i'd suspect the same thing is going on with the discs. i've found that different brands of blanks are better than others... one major brand is notorious for "no disc" errors. i thought it was me 'til my brother called me asking what the problem with his computer might be. i asked what brand of discs he was using... sho 'nuff... dare i say?

Like most other fields, this may be a side-effect of the whole outsourcing/not-better-but cheaper/faster thing most companies are doing to save money.

I'm sure they WANT to make as much money, and still want CD's bought, but the QA on these things might not be as strict or consistent, and if you can sell a song for $0.99 on itunes (and other places), then they might make as much (or more) online and not have to pay for art work, press checks, replicating, shipping, etc.

I bought a discount DVD from WallMart of all places, (impulse buy - a barrel of cheap DVDs), and the saleslady (nicely) said, "Keep your bill. We've had the odd one come back. They're made in (another country)."

It's not necessarilly a good business practice to manufacture to the absolute lowest price. I was brought up to "buy quality", (which you have to pay for, and therefore appreciate), then look after it. Turns out, it's kind of the "green" way as well.

For what it's worth, the DVD played perfectly.

In our household we got about 7 CD's and none of them had issues. I think it was just a rash of bad luck.
