i think you'd be less p-o'd if you had a chance to review some of the members' music collections and inspirations.
for the most part, at least from what i've seen in my short time here, musicians who are constantly held in high regard are:
the beatles
jeff beck
led zeppelin
eric clapton
jimi hendrix

just to name a few.

my 11 year old son enjoys learning zeppelin as well as stevie ray vaughn, and guns and roses songs... and ask him what his favorite jeff beck song is... he'll tell you without hesitation "ice cream cakes".

as far as "who is a better person"?... i've never met either, so i'll step aside from the poll.

i've met adrian belew, todd rundgren, robert fripp, & trey gunn... fripp was rather distant, although he left a very nice note for my friend who catered the show. all the rest seemed to be very good people.

As much as I don't care for most newer music, I am a firm believer that all art must keep moving forward. It's focus must remain on what is NEW. Just like music kept moving forward when you were young and your favorite artists were rising, it should keep doing the same thing now. Thats my 2 cents

I totally agree. You can appreciate the classics and new good stuff at the same time. Don't like anything new? That's fine, at least WRITE some stuff that has that old style. But for God's sake, do something more than just play oldies all the time in your band!

I agree with all of the above.
In time, you will notice there are many older guys in the forums, who love the classics but we also listen to the new stuff as well.
It's what a guitar player does. We are always open to new ideas to utilize into our own creative repetoires.

rhumba is exactly right. guitar players are open to the music. i like it too. all im trying to say is just the new music is not enough. its like playing a guitar without 2 of the strings. its not complete

Is this really a comparison between Jerry Garcia and Jimmy Chamberlain, the drummer for Smashing Pumpkins? Seems like an odd comparison. As far as who is a better person...what does this have to do with guitars? Just wondering...Both are/were junkies and musicians...I don't know much of anything else about them as people to say who was a better person.

I'm pretty sure that "mona_lisa" is just the latest incarnation of "wingfield m." She has nothing substantive to add to the discussion--she's just here for her own amusement.

I don't believe in the Old Bands anymore. I remeber the day after I found out the awful truth about Saint Nicholas, my Big Brother said to me,"You're so dumb you still think Led Zeppelin is real! You prolly still believe in Greg Allman!"

I cried and cried....

well, why stop at the grateful dead? what about the byrds? the dave clark five? chuck berry? johnny cash?...
nat king cole? johnny mathis? perry como? louis armstrong?...
lyszt? mozart? bethoven?

a little music appreciation goes a long way. each generation of music has built on whatever came before... and more often than not, was criticised for it until it became the mainstream, only to be considered "old fashioned" shortly thereafter by the general public.

on the other hand, the majority of true musicians i've had the priveledge of knowing can listen to and learn from music of different styles and periods, and apply it in a modern context.

check out perry como's version of route 66 off his "como swings" album... it'll blow you away.

I wouldnt have a clue who is the better person, I never met either of them.

As for old bands not getting enough recognition I'm not sure how you get to that idea.
From what I have read on here old is best.

Personally i enjoy good music ( my taste of course) whatever the year.

You should try to get a hold of classic rock magazine, the title should tell you everything about it, its a great read.

You have saint nicholas? I thought only the Netherlands and Belgium knew him and celebrated his birthday!

I'm not religious but I have to say, have faith!
some of them were real, and some of them even meant to do good!
By the way, I'm 15, and I usually listen to "old" music, like Jimi Hendrix, Beatles, the Stones and stuff like that, and I know that my friends do too!

I listen to plenty of old bands, regularly. You have to give new music a chance too, I just stuck a CD I bought today in the machine, it's a young girl called Beth Rowley. This girl is talented, bigtime! I'm glad I gave her a chance, by listening to her stuff.
