I always thought that was because hendrix didnt want to go on after the who. He and townsend got into a arguament about it, neither wanted to follow the other. Guess he got his wish.

The Grateful Dead aren't really a radio or video based band - they acquired their audience from touring, and since they aren't touring, they aren't really picking up a new generation of listeners - except when folks go with friends to see Phil & Friends, or Ratdog, or any of the Dead related bands.

Their music isn't for everyone, but then what is, except maybe some pop band/singer who catches everyone's mind share for a brief time.

I first saw the Dead back in February of 1969 at the Fillmore East. They were the opening act for Janis Joplin. My last shows were June 18th and 19th 1995 at Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J. - Bob Dylan opened for them.

In total I most likely saw over 300 shows, I once tried to make a list, but I didn't really feel like doing it - so I let it go.

I miss them, but there is a lot of music available of theirs - either from their own library or the thousands of folks who recorded them live - with permission of the band.

As Jerry once said (not an exact quote, but close) - Once we play the music, it's out there.

So if you want more folks to get into the Dead - take some friends to see Phil & Friends or Ratdog - tell them that many of the the Dead's live performances are available - some as CDs, some as paid downloads, and many as freebies.

Introduce them to the various sites where the music and lyrics are available, tell them about the various Dead related podcasts - one of my favorites is The Dead Show on KOPN 89.5 at http://deadshow.blogspot.com/

Gil, a long time Deadhead :P 8)
