So someone bought me a new practice amp for christmas. They were never given the manual for it. I called Guitar Center and asked if they had it out back, they said no. I asked them to order me one, and they want to charge me the $10 Fender charges for manuals. Is this ridiculous or what? Ive spent over $2500 there in the last 9 1/2 months, and they want me to pay the $10 for the owners manual. I swear, if I can help it I'll never give that outfit another dime. I really wish there were some decent independently owned music stores around my area. Well, there are, but they don't sell what I use, so I get stuck going to GC which has turned into the Walmart of music shops...... Just venting :x

GC is notorious for scamming their customers. Go to that other local music shop you spoke of and see if they`ll order your gear from now on. I would go back to GC and demand that they give you the instruction book or report them to their regional manager. Someone said they were removing `08 MIA Strats from the new molded case they come in and selling them seperately. You would be better off using Sam Ash, at least they stand behind their sales. I`ve had nothing but good experiences with them.

You might be able to download the manual for free at http://www.fender.com/support/electronic_products.php.

I hate Guitar Center as well. I am trying not to use them if I can. I use a place called the Texas Music Emporium now. They are a smaller mom-and-pop-type store that carries the Fender line. Most of the associates there are cool. Not to mention that I payed almost $100 less on my Fender HWY 1 there.

If I am looking for just strings, I'll go to Best Buy before GC.

I use GC as little as possible. Fortunately I have a plethora of good music stores in my area

I am not a big fan of GC. But I have to say that at least at my local GC the sales people are good. The one I buy stuff from I have known for at least 10 years and he is the best salesman of the store. He is friendly and courteous. So he is in constant demand and I am sure he does well on his commission.

I agree. In the GC that I go to, they have a raised platform and are always watching. Plus they are not very helpful. Sam Ash stores are hard to come by, but by all means, use them whenever you can. +1 for independent stores and Sam Ash.

I recently bought an acoustic guitar. I found a nice Breedlove at a big discount at GC. It was $300 off original GC price. I found out it had a broken truss rod...some bargain! The guitar was discontinued so I found another guitar, a nice Seagull S-6 Original. The sales person at GC said it came with a 1-year warranty. I found another S-6 at a mom & pop music store, it played better, and I bought it. At the mom & pop they told me the S-6 has a lifetime warranty. Wow, that's a major difference! They explained to me that GC gets different merchandise than the independent stores. The GC Seagull, they claimed, is made in China and made especially for them. All other Seagull guitars are made in Canada and carry the lifetime warranty. GC had told me their Seagull S-6 was also made in Canada. I don't know who's telling the truth, but my Seagull S-6 has a serail # embossed on the back of the neck, the GC didn't have a serial #. I worked for an audio-video department store years ago that told me companies have different grade qualities for the same items. Deep discount stores were getting lower quality products and could therefore sell them at cheaper prices. I'd love to know for sure if this is true...take it for what it's worth.

I too have had more than one bad experiences at GC. I take almost all of my business to Capitol Guitars in St. Paul MN. The owners are gigging musicians, very helpful, and very knowledgeable. Also, if they don't have something, they always work hard at locating what you need and bringing it in. If anyone is interested their website is www.capitalguitars.com

Eric and Billy are the owners - they ship world wide and have an e-bay store to boot. (you would think that I work there with this stellar "plug")

I tried to order and pay for a MIM Strat for my nephew in Virginia last year, from Guitar Center. It was a nightmare from start to finish, I don't know how many times I tried to explain the guitar was not for me here in the UK. I gave up in the end, and sent the money to my bro. He went in to his local place and got the guitar, as well as some nifty freebies. My nephew was over the moon, and man can the boy play!

GC is like Denny's, if the manager is on top of things, it kicks-buns. If the Manager could care less, it stinks. Guitar Center in San Bernardino never let me down, but before they had a decent floor manager it was hit and miss.

BTW, I got my old Fender Red Knob Deluxe 85 brand new from a small music shop (we're talking '89), and it didn't come with a manual, he said he could order one but I'd have to pay what it cost to get it from Fender.

I guess my point is, it's not the sign on the front of the store or the size of the Corp that supplies the inventory, but who's inside the store, and wheather they have any pride in their work or not.

One of the problems is that when they went public, they took the salesmen off commision and put them on salary, so the incentive to earn your business went out the door. The last two bigger ticket items I bought from them they tried to overcharge me. When I bought my american deluxe, the price on the tag said 1200, when it rang up it came up as 1225, when I pointed it up the guy gave me some run around, then continued ringing it up like it was no big deal. I stopped him and asked him if he was gonna fix it, and he was like, "uh yeah I guess." He came back and said I was rigjt and put some other number in and it dropped it $6, I pointed it out, but by then I was so fed up, I just paid it. I realized later it was a year old model which kind of pissed me off. I bought an amp a few moths later and the same thing happend. I got an acoustic, there was a problem so I brought it back a week later to exchange. They came out with another new one that looked used, it was banged and scratched all up to hell. When I told them I didn't want that one, they acted like I insulted them, they did it, but didn't want to. These things, and the whole manual thing on their own aren't big things, but together (and these are the last 3 things I bought besides small things like strings, are indicative of a theme that runs through that store, with a couple exceptions there employees are incompetant, and unable to put aside they're personal biases and opinions on equipment to be able to help you with any other products then what they play (or Schecter guitars because every store pushes thewm because they have by far the biggest profit margins). I couldn't believe they want me to pay for a manual they should have in the 1st place. I sold cars for years, and if I ever conducted myself like them, id never had made a check. Id get people those kind of things even for used cars, let alone new ones that are supposed to have them. I'm utterly discusted with that store. I guess ill have to do my business at Daddys junky music, which I hate to do because the place is kind of a dump and never has anything in stock, but at least they do right by you.
