I'm old school , prefer owning the hard copy CD & artwork etc. I am surprised that so many prefer downloading but I guess it's becuase of the price involved.

I've recently started downloading, and have become quite passionate about it. The biggest downer about downloading though is that you don't get liner notes and photos. I really liked reading the notes and looking at the pics.

I haven't downloaded anything yet, and the main reason is that it's so easy that once I start I know I will be unable to stop. Sure, songs are only 99 cents each, but I'm sure with me it would add up quickly, and then I'd have to upgrade my iPod to hold them all, and and and...

So I buy CDs, mostly from Amazon because you can get them quickly. I too like having a tangible thing with artwork and liner notes. But then you do have to drag them around when you move. Not only that, I'm also still dragging around about 300 vinyl lp's, even though my turntable doesn't work, and about the same number of cassette tapes I made back in the day.

And on age - I'm 45, and was thinking I was WAY too old to be just learning guitar, but I've been really delighted that there's such a range of ages on the site - a few other 40+ beginners too. Thanks everyone for your welcome and encouragement!

I still buy CD's. Sometimes, I purchase downloads when I hear a song I like. I'd say that I have at least 500 purchased CD's and just as many albums on vinyl. Sometimes, I'll download an album or single that I have vinyl for. I've made my own from vinyl, but to me it just doesn't sound as good. I've noticed that the few vinyl releases today also include a download.

I'm 55 now, and I don't feel "old"... my bones do, though.

I buy CD's download and buy albums. I love the turntable.

But with a big harddrive on an MP3 player its so awesome that you can carry your entire music collection (well, not quite, but a lot anyway,) wherever you go.
I'm 38 and the high quality, high storage MP3 player to me is the best technological advance of the last decade or so.

P.S. the only time you are too old to learn to play guitar is when they're putting you in your own hardshell case!

I always buy CDs when it comes to me listening to music. If it were an option in the stores, why wouldn't we purchase cassette tapes of our favorite bands?

To me it is simple: sound quality. If so, then why would I opt to download some crappy mp3 of low bitrate as opposed to buying the CD myself and having it max bitrate or at least lossless if on the computer? Aside from cost ... I believe we should support the artist and I always buy my CDs and go lossless for everything.

That's just me ;)

That's what I think, too. I've had everything from a Transistor radio with the Mono Ear Bud thing, to The first Tape Walkman, to portable Cd Players. An MP3 player with 30 or more GB's is the best thing that's ever happened.

You do have a point there, ofcourse. But usually you only have bad quality downloads when you download single songs. When I download, I always download entire albums, and those are usually pretty good quality. But ofcourse they will never be BETTER than CDs.

Can't argue with the fact that artist should be supported. That's why I buy CD's myself.

Nowdays, as long as you have your downloading program set to High Quality, a single song is the same quality as a hole album which is the same quality as a CD. In some cases, if the CD was made before digital mastering was perfected, a Download will be better than the CD.

And trust me, if you legaly download from Itunes, Napster, or the Zune Marketplace, the Artist is supported. In fact, because there's very little overhead, they make more profit off of a download than a CD.
