To the point: When I play, I usually play unplugged.
I began to do that, so I could hear the difference between hard and soft strums better, but now I do it all the time.
It does work, but I guess I don't really know how my guitar sounds on my amp.
I do play with my amp on sometimes, but I'm usually afraid of bugging people with the noise.
So sometimes I play with a headphone on, but still, most of the time, I'm sitting, watching tv, and when I get bored, I pick up my guitar and start playing.
Without putting the amp on.

Any other who do this? is this bad?

Also, when I play unplugged, and i get in the mood, I strum really really hard. Is this a bad thing for my guitar?

hints, tips, experiences, opinions:

i do too!! i love it and i think the amp can kind of be a distraction at times. i just watch tv and go and get my guitar and play for hours, unplugged. its not bad, its a good think. makes you want to play!! if you dont want to have everyone else hear, invest in a vox amplug and a good set of headphones. then you can get in the "zone"!

wow! There are really others out there!
That's good to hear. I've also been hearing lots of good stuff about that "vox amplug". I've been wanting a vox for a long time!
But i'm now saving for a Fender Deluxe players strat...
but what's so special about the vox amplug? [edit] nevermind explaining what this is, I found out. Sounds pretty cool! [/edit]

any other fellow unpluggers? or pluggers who have something to say bout it?

The Jerm,

I posted a link on the other site "guitar heaven". It is a pocket-sized amp that you can plun into your guitar. You have to use headphones to hear yourself. There are 3 different moddles. The best thing about them is no one will hear you but you while you are in your room. They run around $40 or so.

I also play unplugged from my amp a lot. It is good to keep the skills up. But you have to know that what you play unplugged will sound totally different when plugged in. You need to hear what you play. You need to learn to control what comes through the amp if you want to play the electric guitar as far as your playing-style. If you state that it is a distraction playing with your amp, play clean with 0 effects. Then it is truely you, your guitar, and amp.

well, like rkeisher said, you don't hear how you sound through an amp...
but i guess it isn't bad, as long as you sound good with an amp too.

It is ok to play unplugged to keep skills up if you need to. I was just trying to say you need to get used to hearing yourself playing through an amp as well. The amp is less forgiving and will teach you precision.

I do sometimes. More now that my main amp is in the shop :(

It's certainly not a bad thing though. THe better you sound unplugged, the even more better you'll sound plugged in

I do it with my 2 Strats - especially when I'm doing some of my scales and finger exercises.

A lot of my unpluged play is done with my SW210CE acoustic guitar.

Unless at a rehearsal, jam or gig of course, I always have and still continue to play unplugged.

When I first started learning how to play guitar, the local neighborhood guitar idol said to me that the mark of a good guitarist is anyone who can turn their stuff up to 10 and sound like a million bucks and then shut it off and sound just as good. I never forgot that and he proved his point time and time again. All my technique, style or whatever you want to call it comes from this ideology and all the other stuff which generally requires amplification always fell into place pretty much immediately as a result.

I play my strats unplugged all the time. They sound really cool unplugged, and it's a good way to build your dexterity and finger muscles without making anyones ears tired (including your own ears). Plus when you come up with a riff or chord change, you can finish it by either plugging in and electrifying it, or pulling out your acoustic and take it in that direction.

Funny thing thopugh, I never play my Gibson unplugged. It doesn't sound nearly as nice as an unplugged Strat. The trem springs even ring a little and give it a little unplugged reverb.
