I have a MIM Strat with worn out frets. I want to get a new maple (preferably) neck with jumbo frets and Fender Stratocaster in BIG letters on the front (preferably). How can i be sure it will fit my bolt holes? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks ! Also links to eBay auctions that would fit would be fanatastic too :D

bol316,

Have you looked into refretting the worn out frets? I know that the amount you pay will depend on how many frets need refretted. It might be cheaper than buying a new or used neck.

Everything i read seems to indicate that refretting is way more expensive then a new neck. How much do u think i can get it done for?

Really depends on how many needs to be re-done. If all of them needs to be redone, you may do better with purchacing a new neck. Have you taken it to your local Fender repair shop for a quote? I've read posts that for the whole neck to be redone it can cost between $150-$300. All of this depends on the luthier and how well their work is. If it is just a few frets I am sure that it could be done cheaper.

I recently priced what it would cost for re-fretting. The price in my area, seems to be about $350. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where prices are much higher than most of the country, and I'm sure prices vary among luthiers.

For me.......when my frets are shot, I'll probably go with re-fretting, since I like the neck that's already on there. I'll probably also replace it with Stainless Steel Frets that last a lot longer, so save on future hassles. Stainless Steel frets are a big more expensive, though. I'm willing to pay that little bit more for less hassles in the future.

The guy I go to (I live in LA) charges:

- $88 for a recrown and redress (if that's all you need)
- $188 for a complete refret, or 198 for refret over binding.

Set up is $38 with fret work - he normally charges $54.

I'd have the refret over risking the condition of a neck on EBay unless I had serious issues with the current neck. The guy I go to is 100% reliable and would stand behind the work.

bol316,

I do this type of repair all of the time. If you can post a pic of the condition of the frets that are worn out I can tell you if a re-crown will work. Most of the time, a re-crown is all that is needed. I charge $65.00 for a re-crown and philip602 mentioned $88.00. Either way, that is much cheaper than a new neck and much more reliable - unless you hate the neck and are looking for an excuse to replace it :D

I have a 79 neck U shape that I love, the frets are low but still playing so I dont worry about it but for sure I'll get a refret versus a new or used eBay neck. The feel of the neck is the most important thing to me, it's like finding a pair of comfortable shoes.
