I was playing unplugged I figured that was the only way I would get in the zone, coz that's what I always do, when I put my amp on I start playing real carefully, because I'm really afraid of making mistakes when people can hear me.

read bout that in my new topic:"unpluggers"

Do you have an amp with a headphone jack? If not, Vox has a product that is only $40 bucks or so that you plug into your guitar and use headphones to listen to yourself. Check these out:

Might help you get into the zone while parents are home.

It's a zen thing for me. If I'm stressed, upset, need to get away-I start to play, close my eyes, and after awhile all the crap seems to melt away. Then, if I'm really lucky, I find that higher state of being that makes the movement of time stop, if only for a little while.
I find that at the end of these little journeys I feel much calmer and relaxed and ready to deal with whatever may be going on.
I get into that state of mind at other times, with various styles of music, but the best are when the trip takes me from somewhere stressing to somewhere much better.
I wish everyone could have something like we guitar players have that has so much power to change a negative state of mind into a positive one.

Oh yes, I've been in the Zone. The Zone is why I've kept playing all these years. It really clears your thoughts, and has a calming effect.

It helps to keep a guitar plugged into an amp(or an Acoustic on a stand), ready to play in a clean little corner of the house, that's dedicated to you and your guitar. I can't record and get in the zone, but I do keep a recorder of some sort ready to capture a good riff when I come across it.
