I have the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "rockumentary" DVD which I have watched about 100 times in the past few months. I am still stunned by the events surrounding the success of that band. It all seemed too good to be true.

Mike Campbell is an underrated guitarist too in my opinion. He fits riffs and runs perfectly into Petty songs without over-the-top guitar disruptions to the music and lyrical content.

I agree ! He is a fantastic guitar player that does not feel the need to steal the show or play unneeded riffs! He plays just enough to enhance the music. That takes talent and also says something about his self confidence! 8)

Recently a Mud Crutch Doc was done. If you have a chance to catch it you will learn a lot more about the History of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell.

Easily my fave major American band.

Funny -- I bought the documentary DVD last year and half way thru the first disc the DVD player in my TV died. I can't get it to release the disc, so it remains stuck in there. Bummin'! I have to destroy the whole TV to get it out because it's a combo unit -- can't bring myself to do it.

TP&HB are an enigma to me. I thought the first three records, esp the first two, were absolutely killer! As they went on the song consistency just seemed to get more and more lackluster. I haven't even played or heard anything on their last three or four offerings (not counting the re-release pkgs, which I have).

Has my fave bass player, Ron Blair. Don't know why -- just like his swoopy style. He's not super flash or anything, his playin' just speaks to me.

As a band I've always admired the way each member plays an interesting, solid part and yet they stay out of each other's way. Never too busy, but each has a powerful backing part. That's what a good band is to me.

Would like to know why Stan Lynch was invited to leave. The story is undoubtedly stuck in my DVD player. I love Steve Ferrone - the guy is a master player -- what a groove machine!! But Stan was really the heart of that band. I really thought his style was a strong part of the TP/HB sound. Bizniz sux and I can't stand Jimmy Iovine.

OK - didn't mean to post so much, but I do like this band. Seen 'em a couple of times. BEST BACKING BAND DYLAN *EVER* HAD!!

I''l have to do some "Mudcrutching" - I have some extra cash from Santa. Thanks for the tip Chet. I remember picking up Damn the Torpedoes in the late seventies. Wore new grooves in that album.

The real Heartbreakers featured Richard Hell 8)

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are cool too though.
