I have a few questions regarding the Black and White Fender Starcaster Pack (which contains a practice amp, strings, bag, etc.). The box says Fender Starcaster, but then it says "Strat & Amp Set". This is from Target.

1.) Is this a scaled-down guitar or is it full size?

2.) Is this a learning guitar?

I have not yet opened it, so it is still returnable, so tell me your thoughts and comments regarding this guitar. Thank you!

It's a full sized Stratocaster-style made by the Fender. It's kinda like a Squier Afinity or Bullet Strat. Cheap, but good to learn on.

Do you have the pointed headstock, or the 70s Strat headstock? I noticed in Sam's the other day that they had switched to a "real" Fender headstock.

I played the guitar they had on the shelf (it even had five strings!), and it wasn't bad. I didn't have it plugged in, but they neck was all right. It felt like it was unfinished.

When I get around to building my guitar, I may consider buying a Starcaster, just for the neck. I still love my Squier's neck, but I don't want to sacrifice that guitar.

It is a beginner's/entry level guitar. Not bad for a starter. Learn what you can on it. I read on another thread that it is good to modify on. It may go out of tune easy, my suggestion is to leave the "whammy" bar off and try not to do a bunch of bends with the strings until you can change out the tunners. In a year or two you can move up to a Squire or Fender(or another brand name), you may need to at that point to keep learning.

You will find that you may be struck with GAS (Guitar Aquisition Syndrome). This is the need to buy something for your guitar or just buy a new guitar. It happens to everyone and it can strike at any moment. Have fun with learning to play.

It's full sized and is definately a student model guitar. the electronics are about as low quality as you can get, but it is decent enough to start out on. I'd suggest going with a Squier or Made in Mexico instead but it all depends on your budget.

If you want my recommendation, I'd say return it. For $50 more you can get the Squier Affinity starter pack. The Squier Strats run (from low to high) the SE, Bullet, Affinity, Standard, Deluxe. So, you can see you are not getting a bottom-feeder guitar. ANNNND you get a nice real-Fender amp with it. The Starcaster stuff will be outgrown soon. The Squier pack will take much longer, and this little Fender amp will likely always be useful.

I started on a Starcaster and I will agree the electronics are very, very cheap.
But the body and neck on mine are very well crafted and fitted. My neck, in fact, is birdseye maple - not enough to be rated, but evident.
I changed out the pickups and plan to keep it - for my grandson to start on if nothing else. The U shape neck is a change of pace...
