I have a gripe about music stores. Nobody has anything that I am actually looking for in stock. Heaven forbid that I may actually find the model of Telecaster that I went out to find. And there is no way that I would ever think of special ordering a guitar in the winter. The only stuff in stock is pointy, humbucker equipped guitars aimed at the next Dimebag Darrel. I'm not mad at you metal peeps out there at all, I would just like to see some diversity out there to keep us country, blues, and jazz guys happy in terms of gear.

Well, with the economy in the toilet, most stores would rather unload what they have and pay off existing bills rather than incurring new bills by special orders.

And yes, I agree with you about all that pointy stuff. They are semi-bottom feeders aimed at kids just starting out yet oftentimes, the profit margin is the same on these as with the high end stuff.

Hello Liveatsix,

You raise a good point.
Retailers are complaining about lousy holiday sales
but in many cases I've been in poorly stocked stores.
With a limited selection I not gonna buy what I don't want.
Store's stocked up less because of a fragile economics,
and now have less to sell. A viscious circle.
Lets all hope for some recovery in '09.

Cheers.

I find that Sam Ash has a wide varity of guitars. You may want to try them if theres any near you or go on their website just to check it out.

The place i usually frequent, has over 700 guitars in stock. I can spend a day in the place easily, an alladdins cave. They have some really nice Fenders in at the moment, best I stay away for the time being

I know what you mean...Your looking for a particular model and cannot find it. You do not want to special order one because you don't want to feel obligated to buy it when it comes in, and Heaven forbid that when it gets there it wasn't "the one" you thought it might be.

What I do when I go is I look at all the models available in my price range and play them all. "The one" will call and if it doesn't, oh well, I got to play some different guitars. I know that sucks if you end up purchacing another guitar and the one you were looking for was not in stock and you leave thinking "what if?"

Yep I'm the same Snowy, my local shopped is well stocked, just been there today - only got some strings - but had a strum on a couple of nice Fenders

I find this with just about any "brick and mortar" store I try to shop at. I take the time to research online and find exactly what I want and then when i go out to buy, nobody has it in stock. Extremely frustrating.

I went in looking for the Classic Players 50s Strat, and ended up buying the Deluxe Players Strat. I had never played either, and I quite like the Deluxe, but I would have liked to try the 50s.

I'm fortunate enough to have House of Guitars close enough that I can go there anytime I want. They have almost anything in stock (plus they're a local store big enough to not only be a Gibson dealer, but be featured in Gibson/Epiphone's weekly newsletter). They also have plenty of discontinued models in stock, as long as you don't mind looking. I saw some racing-stripe Toronados last time I was there, and some Gibson Melody Makers that haven't moved in three years.

I'm pretty lucky, the two closest Music Stores to me are chock full of nice Fenders and Gibby's and Pointy Deans and Sleek Schecters. And a nice variety of beginner axes. One's a little short in the Amp department, but his space is limited.

On the other hand I'm not so lucky, as they are 50 miles away from me in the opposite directions. If it wasn't for online stores, I'd have to wind my own strings.

Old Town Music: Cort, Alvarez, Spector, Laney, good vintage guitars.

$@!&#!'s Music: Samick, Silvertone, Roland, ok vintage guitars.

The Music Box: Fender, Ibanez, (this one company I forgot), I haven't seen vintage guitars here.

Yeah, I've got a fair selection here. I bought my tele at the music box and now have a 50$ gift certificate to Old Town. I'm thinking about getting a pedal there.

In a 50 mile radius we have a few stores. He have the Texas Music Emporium, Guitar Center, Parker Music, (I cannot believe I am about to say this one) Best Buy, and a few mom and pop stores. Most of them sell Fender except the mom and pop stores and Parker Music. I generally shop at the Texas Music Emporium, they are the bomb on good deals.
