You don't have to have a tube amp to play the Blues, however, I miss having one. I say practice on what you have for now. You can always buy a Blues Driver pedal for about $100-$150 (I use Boss effects, but there are other brands out there) or something later. Once you have enough money, buy a great tube amp to play the Blues on.

Amp or guitar dont matter.
This bloke uses a 3 stringed wreck and a 15watt vox solidstate.

He seems to pull it off though.

Traditionally, yes; actually, no.

Blues is all about feel. It's not about what type of equipment you have. My last band was all blues and I play thorugh a Crate GX-65 which is a solid state amp and I can get a bluesy tube tone out of it, so don't let anyone tell you that you have to have this or that in order to play the blues. A real bluesman uses whatever's available to get his point across.
+1. In school they dont want me to play in their band ecause i am the only only one who plays 12bar blues in the school. They actually do metal. So i am gonna play in a adult band if i could

If your really blue you dont even need a guitar :D. All them fella's of the 30's,40's and 50's didnt worry about what their gear was. They just grabbed any old thing and played.

You don't need a tube amp to do blues. I play blues through my Marshall AVT50 halfstack or my Fender G-DEC Jr. whenever. Although, its better to have a tube if you want to use things like the Tubescreamer.

Hello Ali,

In this opinion, equipment does not matter. What matters is the soul of the player.

Best of fortune.

Do you need one? Absolutely not.

Will you want one eventually? At some point, absolutely.

Not only is there a great tone you get from a good tube amp, but there is a "feel" playing on it - the way the sound reacts to your hands, that is very addictive and something you'll want to have.

Play on what you have, until you can get a great tone from your current set up. That way, you'll sound and appreciate that tube amp so much better later on.

I agree with everyone else... you don't need one. But, eventually you'll want one. One thing for sure... tube amps are heavier to lug around.

I've owned them... But, now I have a LINE 6. (Yes, I know... some people don't like them... I use it for recording...)

Anyway... there are a lot of models on there. If I was going to get another tube amp, I think I'd like to get an Ampeg...

I've been a solid state Bluesman since I started. Tube amps sound great when you turn them up to 8 or more, but I prefer the naturaly compressed tone of an Overdriven Solid State, as well as the volume control you get. Solid State usually sounds good from 2-7 on the volume, so it's easier to adjust for room size. If you look at a Tube amp sideways the Tubes will change Bias, or start smokling or just straight burn out. You can drop a Solid State amp off the back of the Truck and it'll work just fine.

I will say that Solid State will never sound as "Fat" as a Tube amp, but with a Tube Driven Pedal, Tube Pre Amp, or Tube Emulation Pedal like a TS 9 your Audience will never know the difference.

When it comes to playing, I think that how someone sounds depends 80-90% on the player, and 10-20% the gear...Many people think its the other way, but as I have stated before, just because you get all the exact same gear your favorite player uses, that does not mean you will sound like that player, unless you have the same heart, soul, and feel of the original player...BB King would sound like BB King whether he was playing through his rig, or someone from Lamb of Gods rig, yeah, it'd probably be a bit more distorted if you didn't change the settings, but more than likely, you could still tell it was BB King playing based on the how the player plays, not just what notes or gear the player plays...
