I recently discovered a new radio station here, rock radio. It's the only thing I listen to in the car these days, great music 24/7.

Seems like every time I turn on the radio, Boston or AC/DC is on....

Radio today is so bad because most are owned by big corps. with no music background, Clear channel is the one that owns most of the stations around here.

Every now and then they will have a weekend where they play a whole decade of lost stuff that hasn't been played to death. :P

Most classic rock stations seem to me to be in a rut. We have one here in LA that I was calling "Radio Zep" for a while -- all they ever played were well known songs by the same groups, and so it seemed, every third or 4th song was yet more Zep. ENOUGH!!!!!

Like it or not, it comes down to who pays the bills. My favorite jazz & blues station has been "evolving" their format to what the upscale large donors want. And that's meant fewer hours of blues a week, an end to the acid jazz show, no more obscure rock, rock-a-billy and blues artists on Saturday night and so on. Even the two weekly blues shows seem to be under pressure to play only "safe" artists (BB King, Albert King, Clapton, etc.) and a strong mix of known songs.

I listen to radio less and less, use the Internet more and more. So far, the corporations and wealthy donors haven't figured out how to control that so interesting, challening and different content can still be found.

That reminds of something I haven't thought of in a very long time. About 25 years ago in Houston there was a station called KBTL. All they played was the Beatles, 24/7. I love the Beatles, but I soon got tired of it. So did a lot of people, apparently. Soon they opened up the format to post-Beatles materials from the Fab Four, and then to songs they wrote for other people (like Badfinger), and ultimately to Beatles covers. But it couldn't survive. It shut down after about six months, a failed experiment. There really is too much of a good thing.

Yeah, the "classic" rock stations play everything to death. It makes me want to scream. The funny thing is that there are a lot of people that want to hear this stuff. I find those people to be non-musicians and non-musical. It seems to be just a kind of white noise to them.

Anyone remember when the new FM was "all music - no talk?" How long before satellite radio goes that route?

Gridlok

damn... I sure do wish I as born already when the FM was all music no talk.
And I really don't think we'll ever have the joy of re-living those days, coz everything is so commercial...
but then again, it may be that capitalism is collapsing, so maybe in the future people will find some old rock CD's and broadcast them over and over, and then it will be overplayed again, but people will like it.

sorry, i went to "we will rock you" musical... it has corrupted my thinking

Anything by Bush. Who in their right mind still listens to Bush other than when they are subjected to it on the radio?

How could I forget about them? Does the singer grunt on every song, or just the ones that get played on the radio? Also, I think whenever they get ready to record a CD, they sit back and think "Which crappy 80's band or song can we cover on this album?", Tears for Fears? Genesis? I'm surprsed they have not covered anything by A-Ha or Mike & the Mechanics yet, or have they? Starships "We Built This City" might be right up their alley..."We built this city...Errh-Errh...On Rock N Roll...Errh-Errhh...."
