Dear loungers,

since you are so helpful and I can't find the best answer:

What is the cheapest and safest way to ship the guitar I'm gonna buy in london to my own country ( the Netherlands)?
I'm flying back and forth from the next sunday until tuesday. I'll be buying it in london ( don't even know where exactly yet).
Ofcourse it's too big for hand luggage, and I don't have some bag i could put them both in.

how? how much? how fast?
speed really doesn't matter to me, I've waited a long time, so I can wait some more.
reminds me of a bob marley song... nevermind.

please help me!

I wouldn`t ship it, I would get a hard case for it that passes airline regulation and put it in the cargo hold of the aircraft and take it on the same flight your on. This way you won`t have to worry about when it `ll be delivered. Make sure the case locks and you put a sticker on it for the cargo handers to top load it. Don`t get a case thats shaped like a guitar cause it might disappear like that. Get a rectangular case so its hard to determine whats in it. I use to work for the airlines and thats the best advice I could give you.

Hello The Jerm,

Get one of those new fender cases
they are great for airline transport.
They're tougher than a pair of wooden shoes.
By saving shipping cost it'll be like gettin
the case for free. Your gonna need a hardshell anyhow.

Have a great trip.

Cheers

Brandoni guitars make a very good cheap flightcase thats taken my jackson right around the world.

To travel to Holland i'd just take the ferry though. 4 hour journey from harwich to rotterdam. with boarding/checking in times its about 4 hours by plane too.

If you must fly, the only 100% safe way is to buy a seat for your guitar. Every airline on the planet throws your stuff around. They seem to treat musical instruments worse than anything else. Customs officials in airports target you when they see you carrying a guitar too.

Check with your airline some still allow instruments into the cabin although the ferry seems to be a great idea. Don't need to worry about customs though, all being part of the EU is good sometimes :)

My vote is for UPS shipping with the guitar in a hardshell case wrpped in bubble wrap inside a good sturdy cardboard box.

I have shipped guitars and firearms by Fed-x in approved flight cases and they handled them very good. I took them to the Fed-x office and they took care of the paper work with me and were helpful. I have also bought guitars and had a number of them shiped to me by both Fed-x and UPS with no problem but one time and that was UPS. I had a Gibson sent to me and the delivery driver went to the wrong house next door and no one was home and he left it on the front porch  needless to say when I check on line status and saw that it had been deliverd but I never got it I called UPS they radioed the driver who said he left it no one was home. I told them we had beed there all day they said could I check the neighboring house at which time it was found next door. Needless to say I was upset 1400. guitar left out in 40 degree weather for 3 hours and I did let UPS no that . I let it acclimate for several hours in a cooler part of the house before opening turn out ok :)

I ship a lot of guitars, elec and acoustic. Put guitar in a case, put case in the box the case might come in or larger box, and wrap/ pack in bubble wrap. UPS FedEx BaxGlobal are your best bets, don't forget the fragile stickers...

wow, thank you all for your replies.
I have to say, I'm back from london now, and they didn't even have the guitar I want (anymore) on Denmark Street.... so that pretty much sux. And I didn't buy another Fender Strat because I don't like to rush things when it comes to expensive matters.
But, thanks to all your helpful replies, I decided I'm gonna buy me a hardshell. Although it simply CAN NOT be tougher than WOODEN SHOES haha

I suggest that if anyone else has a question about shippings, you ask it on this topic.

also, any ideas for a good, multi-guitar-storing-hardshell-guitarcase ?
multi shape-able, because i also own a sortof LP shaped Dean. (really ugly, but it plays really smoothly), and I'd like to be able to use it to ship my new fender strat once i've bought it.

My experience with ups sucks! I was tracking my stuff, obviously. First, my amp showed delivery on time. Never saw the coffee truck. I found the amp about 1 hour after delivery behind a cautus patch in 105 degree temp. Needless to say, I was sweating bullets about my Strat. Same thing the next day. I found my package leaning against a tree about 750 feet from my house in the same type temp. The carton was easily viewed from the road-anyone could have taken it. Luckily, everything was ok, but I expect better for 2K+ worth of equipment. BTW, I paid cash in advance so it would have been hell to get my money back!
