I'll say the first person ( ? ) who picked up a stick or whatever and started hitting something and liked the sound of it ... the first "rock" star. I bet the girls back then came on to him BIG time .... !!!!!!!

Yeah, I also think Elvis Presley had a big influence on a lot of musicians, that went on to influence others but it's a difficult question to attribute to any one artist.

I always thought that Charlie Parker did a lot to change the way music was played and influenced a lot of great Jazz.

I think all of the artists mentioned here have done great things for not only the music industry, but society as a whole. Whether it was in a direct attempt to achieve major things (like Bob Marley and world peace!), or just a guy trying to have fun and express himself, while helping others do the same in the process (like Elvis!), many musicians have changed the way people think and act in a beneficial way. Two that really stick out in my mind though, are not mentioned here. One is Kurt Cobain (I am a little biased because Nirvana is my "favorite" band, but that's not to say it's not true!), and the other is Michael Stipe. The lessons that the music of these two men and their bandmates taught to me was one of unity, of love for others, and, most importantly, not to judge anyone even if they judge or condemn you. Both of these men rose from great personal strife to achieve great things, and whether intended or not, greatly changed my life, as well as many other people's lives too!

I voted for Jimmy Herdrix...however, I think B.B. King did a lot to change the music world. If he was on the list, I would have chosen him.

It is an insult to musical heritage to not include Niccolo Paganini.

The man was the first true virtuoso in recorded history.

He astounded people. He literally made people feint when they saw him playing and he was accused of being the devil incarnate. Music was forever changed by how he played.

I don't think Hendrix was / is the greatest guitarist but he certainly changed the way guitarist viewed their instrument.

'Pretty convinced it was the monk, Guido of Arezzo.

No jive.

He is the first one verified as using the five-line staff to write musical notation.

Personal feeling is, one would have to go pretty durn far to beat Fra Guido's contribution to music.

The moderns? "Ah blow mah nose at them. Ah faht in their general direction."

yeah good point and a nice quote from monty pythons holy grail...

but if you start to think like this, you could also say that the first neanderthaler who beat some chunk of wood with a bone ( or a neanderhal friend, for that matter) was the man who changed music the most, by inventing it...

Musicians don't change the world - they inspire other people to do so.
