OK, so I have to do an essay for my English class on someone who has had a negative or positive impact on Canada THIS YEAR.

They don't have to be Canadian people, though, it can be anyone. This is kinda urgent, so does anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate it! Thank you ;)

Shania Twaine is Canadian. That's a pssitive for Canada I think. J/K I don't have anything possitive to add sorry.

Hi MercyMercy. Have a look at what (Sir) David Thomson is doing for the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. Not allowed to tell you how I happen know all about that (how mysterious, Ceri!) but it's very big. Tons of art and a building to put it all in. Not bad, especially at this point in the economy.

Canada ought to regard that as a "positive impact"...

Any use?

Cheers - C

That actually sounds like a great idea. Thanks, you saved me lots of trouble...! :)

Hey, yeah? Great, well then start with the AGO's press releases on these pages:

http://www.ago.net/press/

One near the top titled "Enthusiastic crowds..." introduces the subject. It is very understated, but in fact nearly everything they are talking about comes from the Thomson family; the late Ken Thomson and now his son David. A vast amount of British, European and Canadian art, and the entire new Frank Gehry building it has all been put in.

Search back through those press releases and you'll hopefully find mention of the "rediscovered" Rubens painting, "The Massacre of the Innocents". Ken Thomson bought that at auction at Christie's in London about four years ago. It cost 49.5 million pounds, which was the most expensive work of art in history at that time and has I believe only been topped once since. It hung in the National Gallery in London for four years on temporary loan in return for the NG carrying out its restoration. But it was always intended for Toronto - just as soon as they could put up a building to hang it in. Where it has now arrived. (You won't find all of that in the AGO's press releases...)

David Thomson is also now the world's foremost collector of the British landscape artist John Constable, amongst other things. And he personally carried out the entire picture hang in the AGO's new building.

All in all, the story of a great Canadian cultural benefactor.

There you go, MercyMercy: I've written half your essay for you already!

The Fender Forum. Not only the primary source for information about guitars...

Oh, you... In fact there's so, so much Ceri doesn't know. Starting with how to switch out the pots on an ES-335...

Canadian national heros wasn't exactly what I expected to be talking about when I logged on to the Forum today - but what the heck?

And here the only thing I had to offer revolved around Canadian whisky - much dearer to my heart than an art collection but probably not as suitable for an essay...

In the 2008 Icons of Whisky Canada competition held by London's Whisky magazine, Kittling Ridge, the only 100% Canadian distillery remaining in Ontario, was named Best Distiller, while the owner and distiller, John K. Hall, was awarded Ambassador of the Year.
Their product, Forty Creek, is the only Canadian whisky I drink....

How about Gordon Lightfoot.
Positive or negative? You decide.
