Andres Segovia brought the guitar to legitimacy and popularity and being-taken-seriously in the 20th century.

I was very fortunate enough to see Segovia in NYC about 1975. I believe this was at the Alice Tully Hall which is a medium size recital hall holding several thousand people. The stage had only a chair and little foot stool - no laser lights, smoke bombs, dancing girls , NOTHING. The amazing part was the music was the only thing needed !! That hall was so quiet in respect to Mr. Segovia - you could literally have heard a pin drop. The acoustics were/ are that good !!! He played about an hour and a half and what really sticks in my mind about that concert was his dexterity and nimbleness for a man in his 70's .

Here we go again..... who is the greatest guitarist in history ??

The plain simple truth is there isn't one !! Hendrix was a spectacular electric guitar player and in my opinion the other 2 you mentioned were also great players too. What about acoustic guitar, slide guitar, classical guitarists, etc. etc. etc. NO ONE PERSON IS THE GREATEST GUITARIST IN HISTORY - NOT ONE PERSON HERE OR ANYWHERE ELSE HAS HEARD EVERY GUITARIST IN HISTORY. :!: Who knows... maybe there was some poor country boy ( or girl ! ) in the 1800's that could play all of these rockers under the table !!!!!

ps - as the late great Roy Buchanan said " there is no # 1 " .. THERE !

couldn't agree more! you could also just have called this thread "what's the definition of a good guitarist?"
actually, that might have been more interesting, since almost nobody has any sense-making arguement for who the best guitarist ever is...
maybe it was someone in ancient greece, who played some stringed instrument like hell!
or indeed, a poor country person in the 19th centurey!

but sorry jeffo, i don't know who it is (if there is a #1), but it isn't angus young

At any given time, on any given day, and just for a split second.....I think that I am the greatest of all time.

I am a legend in my own mind!

Yes this is a debate that can go on and on I kind of think Hendrix is at the top and Duane Allman right there with him. And what can you say about Clapton other then he's one of the best. And SRV was good but my list would have more people above him for sure. There no way I would say he was better then BB. King and come on there Santana. Cooder, Robert Johnson, Knopfler, Ramone ,Page.

It's a tie between this guy and the Guy who was out in front of the Staples Center after the Eagles concert playing for a bag full of dollar bills. He was really good.

Wow, has no one ever heard of Al DiMeola? Probably one of the greatest technical guitarists who ever lived.

Oh man I'm glad someone mentioned DiMeola before I had to! He's one of my favorites! Personally, I am a fan of James Burton, who does have a custom Fender Telecaster model which I have been salivating over lately. He really is incredible. Also Joe Satriani, Santana, and Gary Moore are very talented. I'm also kinda surprised there hasn't been more acoustic or nylon virtuosos mentioned. One that immediately comes to mind is Tommy Emanuel. I've seen him live, and he is amazing. I'm not positive if Eric Johnson been mentioned, but he's also great.

It's a toss-up between Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins. But on a scale of 1-10, I'd probably rate Nigel an 11.

I'm listening to one of my all time favourite guitarist's now, John Martyn. The guy is a legend in certain circles, undoubtably gifted. I feel Rory gallacher deserves a mention here too, I saw him live many moons agao, simply outstanding.
