One of the three you listed would be my number one another would be maybe around my number 5 and then one would not even make my top ten :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

to tough to make a decision -

John McLaughlin?
SRV?
Joe Walsh?
Eric Johnson?
Hendrix?
Pat Metheny?
Clapton?
what about Sonny Landreth?
Jimmy Page is in there somewhere.............
Derek Trucks?
George Harrison could work great magic
Mike Campbell (underrated in my opinion)

and on and on and on........................

That's so hard to compre those three guys. Even though they are all really blues fased, there are three distinct different styles. I always try to describe the guys I like with one word, if possible.

SRV: aggresive
Hendrix: innovative
Clapton: elegant

I like them all and could not shoose one over the other because they are all different.

How about someone from the past?

Grant Green: mixed jazz, some blues and even country. He was one of the first to bring the guitar out of the rhythm section, yet not in the context of folk, rural or electric blues.

Or today?

Kenny Burrell: another leader in having guitar recognized as a serious instrument, not just for "folk" or other traditional music.

Steve Howe??
Jeff Beck??

These two are my top two...

Also...
1) Is it just me or has the David-Gilmour-love machine that exists on this forum not been started yet? Similarly, the Eddie-Van-Halen-love machine will likely be getting out of neutral soon, as well.
2) Please officially throw up for me if I am not present when some loop says Ritchie Sambora, Neal Schon, or Steve Lukather. Yes, they all have talent to varying degree, but those dudes are the best at nothing...

Here we go again..... who is the greatest guitarist in history ??

The plain simple truth is there isn't one !! Hendrix was a spectacular electric guitar player and in my opinion the other 2 you mentioned were also great players too. What about acoustic guitar, slide guitar, classical guitarists, etc. etc. etc. NO ONE PERSON IS THE GREATEST GUITARIST IN HISTORY - NOT ONE PERSON HERE OR ANYWHERE ELSE HAS HEARD EVERY GUITARIST IN HISTORY. :!: Who knows... maybe there was some poor country boy ( or girl ! ) in the 1800's that could play all of these rockers under the table !!!!!

ps - as the late great Roy Buchanan said " there is no # 1 " .. THERE !

Mercy me, will this type thread never go away? I guess not...

One of my personal favorites that we never mention, I guess because he does not play Fender, is Frank Marino. Amazing talent - if you've never heard him live, you have missed a real treat.

Peter Green
Rory Gallagher
Kim Simmonds
Andy Powell/Ted Turner (Wishbone Ash, anyone?)
Pat Travers

The list goes ever onward

I've run out of answers for this question, so I'll just say I love the sound of any guitar that is being played well, by any guitarist.

Andres Segovia brought the guitar to legitimacy and popularity and being-taken-seriously in the 20th century.
