I'm currently looking at new guitars (not that I should be), but I've found myself interested in something that may not exist. It's sort of a combination of Fender and Gibson models... a market Fender has dabbled in, but doesn't seem to be at the moment.

Strat headstock
rear-routed body - no pickguard
two humbuckers
trans blue or blueburst finish
set neck
Tune-o-Matic or wraparound bridge
three-way switch (Gibson-style)
Three or four control knobs (not too sure)
maple neck/fretboard

The closest I can come up with at this point is the Telecaster HH, the Toronado, and a few PRS models. I've looked into building it myself, but I can't finish it myself, and the only source for rear-routed, finished bodies is Warmoth, and in the neighbourhood of $400.

This is relatively close to what I want. I'd prefer a more Les Paul DC-style body, but I'm flexible:

Doesn't sound like you are at all set on Fender, as most of what you want is "non" Fender sounding. This is not a slam, but based on what you want in apperance and what it appears you are looking for in a sound, you may want to look elsewhere.

Take a look at the Jackson SLATQH. It's expensive but had a carved flame maple top, ebony fretboard, two SD humbuckers, no pickguard, etc.

I suggest you look at what Schecter has to offer as well...

You might look into a 1990's Gibson Nighthawk. You can get some pretty cheap on eBay. Gibson made, Gibson body and headstock style, but a very "Fenderish" tone. And I agree with looking into Scheter and I'd ESPs. A Schecter Hollywood Classic looks similar to what you described and is a reasonably priced American guitar.

Maybe I wasn't clear - I'm not at all set on a Fender. Really, I'm looking for a Les Paul that isn't... and even then, I like the looks of a flattop Les Paul double-cut.

The only specifically Fender design is the Strat headstock.

That Warhawk is very good-looking... I may have to explore the site a bit more. Thanks.

Fender did make something like your description - except the colors and the fingerboard and the set neck and the pickguard

Looking through the Elderly listings, I've narrowed it down to three models, I think... unless something better shows up.

Fender Telecaster HH - $629
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Custom-Telecaster-FMT-Electric-Guitar?sku=511262

PRS SE Custom - $599 (the local Guitar Center had it for $500, also)
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/PRS-Guitars-SE-Custom-Electric-Guitar?sku=519370

PRS SE Custom Semi-Hollow - $649, but Elderly has it for $599.
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/PRS-Guitars-SE-Custom-SemiHollow-Electric-Guitar?sku=514461

Of course, GAS will probably overpower my wallet, and I'll end up buying something cheaper - Epiphone Dot, Gibson Melody Maker, Hofner Club, or the Hofner bass...

Why does this have to be so hard?

Also, House of Guitars has a few Toronados hidden somewhere... I'll have to try them out and see what they can give it to me for. I love having a huge local store with enormous numbers of discontinued models left over.
