For a special model guitar?

Some I understand and fully agree with, others leave me baffled.

SRV :D
Dave Gilmour :D
Eric Clapton :D
Buddy Guy :D
Bonnie Rait :D
Jimmy Vaughn :D

All have a pretty vast body of meaningful work

Kenny Wayne Sheppard . . . I'm on the fence on this one. He's really good but . . . . sort of an SRV clone so . . . Still I can understand it.

Billy Corgan ?!
Tom Delonge ?!
Kurt Cobain ?! (It's too bad he died but . . . . )
Avril freakin' Lavigne ??!!

There are many others (in my opinion) who deserve an artist model waaaay more.

What about:
Hank Marvin
Rory Gallagher
Buddy Holly (perhaps the first Strat hero?)
Dick Dale

what do y'all think? Who decides what?

I thought Dick Dale and Rory Gallagher already had custom, artist, and/or signature strats, if not currently, then at some point, with Fender....

You also forgot to mention Danny Gatton, James Burton, Buddy Guy, and Albert Collins, all deserving of the models they have or had.

As far as "deserving", signature and artist models these days are mainly for marketing purposes. Avril Lavinge Squier in order to have marketability towards younger female players and consumers. John 5 and Jim Root signature guitars to appeal to metal and hard rock audiences that may think Fenders are for country music only. Deryck Whimbley (or whatever Avril's husbands name is, the Sum 41 guy), Billy Corgan, and J Masics signature guitars to appeal to indy and punk rock kids who may have thought Fender were guitars for rock stars and not for the the indy and punk bands they like who may use "pawnshop treasures" or Gibson.

Your reasoning is compelling. I just wish here was more to it than market positioning.

I didn't leave Danny, James, and Albert off the list out of a lack of respect for their abilities or contributions. I just ran off what was on the top of my head.

Rory and Dick did have signature models. I remember seeing them both in a catalogue a few years ago.

As for Avril and Derick?... Yeah. I'm not a fan of either getting a sig, but I can understand it.

Kury Cobain I understand because the Jagstang has a bit of a cult following and is in demand. (albeit not enough to send it back to production)

Hank Marvin and Buddy Holly, yeah I'll go with that, they should have been among the first to have one.

I hate to say it, but thats what a lot of music and other similar things come down to, its not talent, its marketing. There are lots of great singers out there, but unless they have a face that they can put on billboards, you won't hear about them. Would we even know who Britney Spears is if she didn't look decent at some point? Probably not, cause as a singer, she's not that talented, but she's very marketable. Reminds me of a line from the great movie "The Harder They Come" in which the record label owner says something to the extent of, "This is show business, no business, no show." Making instruments is nice, but unless they can generate enough business to stay in business...I mean obviously Fender is doing good, but how good, who knows? But businesses often find or believe it is necessary to broaden their appeal in order to compete or stay competitive with competitors...

I agree with you my brother! They are giving artist model guitars to good musicians not only the ones who had a significant role in changing music! :?

I agree. It seems to be kind of a hangover from our recent "industrial age" where we learned how to mass manufacture Model T Fords.

"We must have growth or we are doomed", seems to be the mantra we are led to believe, (and have gone overboard with as far as I am concerned.) It may suit some situations but certainly not all.

Gridlok gets down off the box.

Couldn't agree more. Seems that it started it being hand-in-hand with recognition for talent and a body of work.

Now it is a popularity contest used as a marketing tool.

It's a shame...

There is a cure built in cure for signature series guitars. If they don't sell, they're gone whether the artist is deserving of accolades or not. This is the real world. Amazingly, the really deserving artists do not seem to mind whether they have a signature model issued or not. Unfortunately, it really doesn't matter how good the guitars are. A few years ago I had a chance to buy a Custom Shop Jerry Donohue and fell victim to the old snooze you lose syndrome. I knew I wanted to buy it, but I was slow to pull the trigger. I know all the psychics on the web site can predict what happened. I went in to pay the money and it had been purchased that morning. Who's a thunk it.

Funny, I've had this exact same thought on my mind the last week!

A John Mayer signature strat? I had no idea he was a guitar god.

With all the "hot rodded" parts Fender has laying around now it's probably pretty easy to put together "special edition" guitars. They have all sorts of pickups to choose from and bombine.

Hmmm the "OMG I'm a rockstar" model Stratocaster

SCN at the neck
Dual humbucker in the middle (coil tapped)
Red Lace Sensor at the bridge

Gold Trem and tuners . . . .

Available in Agave Blue with Guitar Hero or Rock Band graphics and a reverse headstock!
