Hi,

I own a '62 Jazzmaster. I don't care a bit about the missing paint on the body (there's really almost nothing left), but I'm a little worried about the neck. The lacquer at the back has come down completely (as usual after 40+ years). What would you say: Is it necessary to have it oiled/waxed for protection, or should I just leave it like it is? I mean, the guitar has probably survived around 25 or 30 years in this state...

I do an oil/wax rub on mine after I sanded the finish off. I do this because it creates an extremely smooth finish and protects the wood. I clean all the gunk off then reapply and it feels like a $2000 pool cue.

I don't think that it's necessary to oil/wax the exposed wood, but like scelestus said, it will feel great if you do

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I'll just give it a try, won't do any harm at least I guess. scelestus: I've got a vivid picture of you in my mind ruining the billiard table cover with your guitar...

Over time, wax may tend to build up, trapping "stuff" between layers and possibly discoloring. Oil WILL condition the exposed wood, but can ooze a bit when warm. I'd go with a good conditioner/polish, such as Meguiar's or Martin.
