'Band" is a fairly archaic word which meant group of people with a common focus or goal.

An early-ish use would be in England at the time of the Spanish Armada campaign. There were 'trained bands' of basically local militia standing by to repel the expected invasion.

'Believe they oft wore specific coloured armbands over street or trade clothing, in lieu of distinctive uniforms.

However, personally 'do not consider a bunch of people leaping about and singing extremely basic, hyper-produced lyrics to be "musical groups," or the (think 30s-40s) musical definition of a "band."
