what do you do when a song starts to beat you? Ive been trying to learn littlewing for the last week ( the intro) and i just cant get it, even with tabs.

Ive started learning with a teacher from the beginning up, using the CAGED system and explaining how the blues works etc. he said very soon we will get to learning songs and working them out yourself, but wants me to get a firm grounding in the basics ( modal blues, major/minor blues, chord formation etc etc).

I trust him and know i will get there, but for folks who dont have a teacher, how do you get past a song you just cant seem to get?

Don't bash your head into it. Stick it on the proverbial backburner and move to another song. When you come back to it in the future you might "get it".

I've been playing less than a year, and your teacher is right. One tip I can give you is to break the notes and or chords in to small sections 3 or 4, to begin with. Practice only these until you can play them seamlessly. Then move to the next 3 or 4, and so on. Before you know it, the song will fall into place. Don't get to frustrated, just take your time, and practice, practice, and... practice

Good Luck

Bill

I actually taught myself little wing... i was watching videos (which i suggest you do) of people playing little wing. Try to remember the actual notes, not necessarily the poistioning of scales, and then play them together.

If you CAN, et your 'soul' guide you, whatever that means ;)

oh i do trust my teacher, but it gets boring just playing with the blues scles and modes over a backing track. i wanted to try learning some songs that folks might know, and that i would enjoy playing. il go at the teachers pace though as he knows what hes doing

for me i find it hard to learn other peoples songs and i find it much easyer making my own songs within what i can do, i can do it easy but then when someone else trys learning my song could be hard. jimi probably made that song and it would be easy to him cus he made it but he might have trouble learning something wierd someone else did.

dunno, just onother one of my points of view.

The getting bored part leads back to what I was saying about bashing your head against a song. You will just get frustrated. Try moving on to something else for awhile. I'm telling you that's the solution. There are a billion songs that peopl e"know' besides "Little Wing".

Along with the previous suggestion to try only small parts, also play each note very slowly and deliberately. Don't even attempt to get any speed until you can hit the notes accurately.

Once you're there, only slowly increase the speed -- speed up a bit but be sure you're still hitting all the notes and the timing is correct between notes. Keep increasing that way and you'll have it.

There are a number of (hardware) tools you can get that will slow a tune down and yet maintain proper pitch and timing. You might consider that option as well.

Beat it back!

Or work out a more simplified way to play it and then work up to the full blown version.

Watch Videos of it is a great Idea. Waych any(or all) Hendrix and SRV footage. They both use the same technique on several songs.

You can put Little Wing aside for a short time and learn a couple easier, but similar Hendrix tunes. Like Wind Cries Mary, All Along The Watch Tower, or Castles Made Of Sand.

Take your time. Little Wing is a very complicated song to learn to play "the right way". Anyone can play the notes, but there is a LOT of feel and things that notes alone don't get across. It will take time to get it to the point where YOU think it sounds like Jimmy.

Also - stop whining! (arnold voice) :) It's like saying you're trying to start out learning Eruption and are frustrated. Well, hell yeah you're gonna be frustrated. If it were that easy, everyone could play it :)

Take you time, learn each little part, and put them together. Play what you do know, so well that you are an expert at those parts, then move on to the next.

Which sage said it?

"Guitar is the easiest instrument to play poorly and the most difficult to play well."

We gotta live with the reality. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
