I was looking at a special edition (MIM) FSR '72 Telecaster Thinline in a White Blonde color and it got me to wondering if Fender only uses certain wood and color combinations together regardless of place of manufacture. An example would be if they only use the Sienna Sunburst color over Ash bodies or would they use Alder bodies on the MIM and Ash on the MIA. Any one who can offer some insight would be greatly appreciated. :?:

Well, they do use the "best" woods for the Custom Shop and the transparent finishes of regular production models.

The MIM standards are made of multi-piece bodies, veneered if the wood shows. The higher end MIM models get the better wood.

When ash is used in a body, it's usually part of the model name or mentioned in the specs.

I don't think they are tied to using certain color to wood combinations but I think the quality of the wood helps determine the color used. In High quality bodies that have good grain or other wood details will tend to be used for translucent color finishes as to show off the wood. Where as a body that is going to be primered and painted with color coats or the metalic coats that change color by the angle you look at from will not be as high of grade wood. You would never no the quality of the wood unless you remove the finish.

Does fender still use veneers. I have a special editon Strat on layaway and I have no idea what the specs are. It has a Sienna Sunburst finish and it looks like ash but i can't be sure.

Sienna Sunburst is on American Standard models. No fear of veneers there, so set your mind at rest. Almost certainly a two piece ash body on that one.

As Orvilleowner said, veneers are used on Mexican multi-piece bodies that have transparent finishes. Orville once posted an excellent photo of a pile of such bodies in the factory. And if he reads this, he may be kind enough to post it again...

Cheers - C

From what I've seen, Ash for natural finish and Alder for everything else MIM. For MIJ, Basswood for solid colors and Alder for sunburst.

I was not aware that Fender was using veneers. I would be interested in knowing more about the application, so research it is.

As a reference, MIA Strats that are painted solid colors and multi-plank bodies too (4). If you strip a MIA that's solid, you might end up with plank marks in the wood.
