Hi. Thinking about learning to play guitar. Reading around, it seems like I'd be OK learning on an electric. I'm partial to Stratocasters, so I'm leaning this way.

One quick question - I read that beginners should stay away from Tremolo bridges, because they're more difficult to tune. Should I avoid this?

Thanks!

The tremolo bridge should not be a problem unless you use it excessively.

If it really bothers you or seems to be hindering your progress, you can "Block It" by putting a peice of wood or a small stack of quarters between the Trem Block (the big hunk of metal in the back of your guitar) and the wall of the Trem Cavity. But you'll probably just get good at tuning a guitar with a trem and never even think about it.

The trem shouldn't give you any trouble once you learn to tune a guitar. It's a bit wierd the first time you change all the strings then tune it and have to tune it again immediately because the tension on the higher strings have now changed the tune of the low strings that you tuned first.

It's no big deal

Enjoy it and welcome to the forum

My first electric guitar was a Harmony Strat copy, interestingly enough, I have been a Telecaster guy ever since...

I also agree with the MIM Standard. It is very affordable. And as you grow into it, you'll learn to appreciate it more and more. Also, you willlikely never truly outgrow it, no matter how good you get ... they are really that good. Just get a proper hard-shell case for it.

It really depends on the tremelo system---Fender tremelo -vs- a double locking tremelo. Some systems make the guitar harder to keep in tune than others. Of course if you are moving the tremelo all the way, yes the strings might slip a little (less of a chance with a double locking system). If you are thinking you do not need a tremelo...just get a guitar with a hardtail bridge or block the vintage tremelo on the Stratocaster you buy.

Let us know what you decided on and if you can, post pics when you receive your guitar.

Get yourself a nice Strat and enjoy.

There ain't much guitar-possible music that can't be played on a Strat. Block the vibrato if it gives you grief, as the others said.

Don't worry about a strat tremolo. If you have a floyd rose, that might be little different.

Keep the bar off it until you get used to playing more. If you're trying to learn, and you're messing with it and knocking it out of tune, you'll get frustrated. Just leave that bar in the box until you're pretty comfortable with the basic and can tune up quickly and easily when you need to.
