I have a song that I made called "Midnight Rain" and I have lyrics that are similar to another song.

Midnight Rain won't you wash away the pain
Midnight Rain will it ever be the same

The chord progression for this is E Major, C/G Major, D/F# Major, and back to E

Now there's a song called Black Hole Sun and it's lyrics are this

Black Hole Sun won't you come, and wash away the rain.

It's chord progression is G Major , G/F Major, and Bb major.

My question is should I change my lyrics, or should I leave it? Because it sound really good in the song, but I don't want to plagiarize. The progressions are different but the lyrics are what I'm worried about.

Leave it. It may sound similar but it is not the same. IMO.

As long as you didn't rip it off on purpose I'd say "Write it". Let the audience decide whether it's legitimate or not. Of course if your not comfortable with the song at all, scrap it.

This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

The song is actually part of a concept album I'm trying to make. This particular song is actually somewhat of a tribute to alternative/grunge music.

Be careful or Kim Thayil will come possess your soul for copying his song!
