Interesting! How our ages and generations are defined by our musical preferences.
All I can say is the truth is constant and never changing no matter what the fad of the day is! And they exposed it after their search within and without! Even Sexy Sadie was exposed! 8)

Not to mention Amazing Grace! .....but poor Eleanor Rigby...what can one say

I'd have to say that the Beatles made a bigger impact on music in general, but I dig the sound and guitar playing of Floyd.

Of course, but what I mean is that your average man-in-the-street is likely to say they're pop, but musicians must surely be aware that they did so much more.

I mean, sure, they started off as a pop band, but only for half of their career could they be called "pop". It's kind of like saying Fleetwood Mac are a blues band - they started that way, ergo that's how they are, but you would never compare early Mac to Rumours....

I just find it somewhat annoying because usually people say "The Beatles were rubbish. They were just a pop band." which proves that they've barely scratched the surface of what The Beatles were really doing, hence they've been written off out of hand (or, very commonly, just to be 'different' and 'cool').

Rant over for now. :)

The Beatles were a rock and roll band. Compared to what was playing on the radio back then, they were hard. They came up hard, played long hours in tough German bars. It could just as easily been another band, I guess. But, the Beatles got here first. And they over took everybody that was on the charts. They changed the sound of Popular Music... And all the other artists were all scared of them. Even Elvis...

Every LP would set a trend. After Revolver came out, suddenly everyone had trumpets somewhere on their tracks. Sgt. Pepper influenced everyone... from the Stones to, yes... Pink Floyd. I didn't start really listening to Floyd untill UmmaGumma... I had heard things, like See Emily Play and sort of yawned. And if you wanted to talk about Pop... I was so sick of hearing "Money" every place I went.

They may be tied in masterpiece albums, though.

I guess what I'm saying is that both bands are great, but The Beatles were the trailblazers. Especially songwriting...

Definitely Floyd - but only after Gilmour joined the group. I didn't care for the Syd Barret recordings. However I must pay great tribute to the Beatles for being one of the first groups to make a "concept" album. Sgt. Pepper's paved the way for many great other "concept" albums including Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.

I saw Roger Waters in concert two years ago and I'll admit, that concert blew me away! They are unbelieveable!
I've seen three Pink Floyd cover bands (the latest was the Aussie Pink Floyd band on friday, and they are pretty good).

The Beatles on the other hand are in a leaque of their own. I read recently that they would practice 8 hours a day 7 days a week. When they reached around 10,000 hours of practice, that was their "tipping point" and when they began to become stars.

My favorite has to be Pink Floyd, their songs sound simple but have so much behind them, a true work of art.

I totaly agree with you. They shouldn't be dismissed as just a Pop Band. They did way more, even on their earlier albums. I'd just add that Pop music doesn't have to be rubbish. Some of it, like what the Beatles, Stones, Yardbirds, and even Fleetwood Mac made great songs for the Pop market. Even Hendrix made Foxy Lady, Crosstown Traffic, Manic Depression, Can You See Me, and a bunch of other songs with Radio Airtime in mind.

A little off topic here, but I also think the Peter Green Mac and Buckingham Mac are more of less different bands. One's Even called The Fleetwood Mac Blues Band, while the popular lineup is called Fleetwood Mac. The beatles went through major musical changes with the same members.
